The pandemic resulted in the permanent closure of roughly 200,000 U.S. establishments above historical levels during the first year of the viral outbreak, according to a study released Thursday by economists at the Fed.
Barber shops, nail salons and other providers of personal services appear to be hardest hit, according to the Fed study, accounting for more than 100,000 establishment closures beyond historically normal levels between March 2020 and February 2021.
The Fed estimates don’t include the roughly 26 million U.S. businesses without employees. Business failures traditionally have been highest among the smallest firms, those with fewer than five employees.

Yesterday, I went in for my monthly hair shearing, aka haircut.
There were two other customers besides me with 2 other hair stylists. 2 years ago there would have been at least 10 hair stylist, a nail person with people waiting.
They feel the requirements of them and customers wearing masks is cutting into their work.
Normally, in the past years, when I made my next appt. there was some negotiating on my part re time and the day of the week.
This time I had my choice for my future appt re date and time. That is normally their most booked time, the weeks before Christmas and New Years.
So even in California these poor providers of personal service are still getting hammered with the stupid rules.

I go to Great Clips in Gilroy and never have to wait.
However, I am a bit envious of everyone working there who received all those givernment checks last year and continue to collect their Universal Basic Income based on how many kids they have.
I broke up, covertly, with the gal who has been cutting my hair for years.
It use to be I’d only let her touch my head but, I’m pissed she received all that money and for now, I could care less who cuts my hair.
Yes, small businesses have been hit hard, but I also see a lot of closures of major bank branches, and large chain restaurants around here in the big city. I have a feeling large retail stores are going to be closing next, since when I go to them (not counting grocery stores), they are mostly devoid of shoppers and on reduced staff already.
Last year the local Best Buy closed in late summer/early fall. At the time the only restrictions were masks.
People found Amazon could deliver in 2 days which really cut in to their box store profits. Now with inflation, rising utility, labor, etc. costs it will be even more expensive to run retail stores. Unless you have really good sales to offset those increases, no reason to stay open.

Covid 19 didn’t do this, GOVERNMENT DID THIS.
Besides the obvious realities that you point out there is another impact from Amazon.
Whenever, we look basically online for any product from Walmart, Costco, Home Depot and many other suppliers.
Amazon, somehow shows their price of that item, its cost and delivery time in the upper right side of our monitor or smart phone.
So, do I want to pay more and get a very slow delivery or buy at the best price, get free and faster delivery and a % going to the charity of our choice.
Another excellent point. it is fairly common to see old malls that got demolished and the site turned into a Amazon DC.
They were built with easy highway access for shoppers, which make the site perfect for Amazon and their employees, trucks and delivery vans.
Malls will still be around, but IMHO, only the biggest and best will survive. They need things like Apple stores, Abercrombie and other similar higher-end stores to attract people.

Increasing robberies in malls in California is due to the “It ain’t a crime unless you steal over $900 dollars worth.
So packs of ferals are robbing stores in big malls and even the smaller Outlet/Discount malls.
Over a decade ago big a Walmart store in a small shopping center in another county was closed due to daylight robberies and customer vehicles being broken into throughout the day.
That former Walmart is now basically an illegal drug re distribution center for that county.
Apparently, Amazon recently offered to put in a distribution center for the reasons you noted into the former Walmart. For some idiotic reason or bribery, that city/county turned them down.
So, Amazon recently opened a new huge distribution center in another county a few miles north of the abandoned Walmart store.
So the idiots or co criminals in the other county are losing out on a lot good business.
