In another pro-life election victory last night, pro-life Republicans captured the Virginia state House from pro-abortion Democrats, where they can begin the process of restoring pro-life laws that Democrats took down when they were in power.
Republicans picked up six seats in the Virginia House of Delegates last night and a leading pro-life group celebrated the victory.
The national pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List) and its partner Women Speak Out PAC Virginia – 2021 celebrated as pro-life Republicans flipped the Virginia House of Delegates, winning back the majority from pro-abortion Democrats who sought to expand abortion on demand through the moment of birth. At the same time, the group’s endorsed candidates Glenn Youngkin (R) and Winsome Sears (R) were elected governor and lieutenant governor of Virginia, defeating abortion extremist Terry McAuliffe.
Pro-life Republicans picked up six seats in the House of Delegates last night with Jason Ballard (District 12), Tara Durant (District 28), Kim Taylor (District 63), Otto Wachsmann (District 75), Tim Anderson (District 83), and A.C. Cordoza (District 91) claiming victory. Women Speak Out PAC Virginia – 2021 campaigned in support of 5 of the 6 new delegates, in addition to: Nick Clemente (District 10), Tanya Gould (District 21), Harold Pyon (District 40), Karen Greenhalgh (District 85), Jordan Gray (District 93), and Russ Harper (District 94).
SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser offered the following analysis:
“Pro-life victories in both the Virginia House of Delegates and the governor’s race are a strong repudiation of abortion extremism that effectively halts the radical pro-abortion legislative agenda in the Commonwealth. Virginia Democrats have made national news for supporting abortion on demand through the moment of birth, and even infanticide. At the top of the ticket, Terry McAuliffe arguably made abortion the central issue in his campaign, and it failed spectacularly. This is due in part to Glenn Youngkin punching back in his own TV ad and in the debates, defining McAuliffe as the real extremist for supporting painful late-term abortions. The pathway forward for the GOP in the 2022 midterms is clear: going on offense on life and refusing to cede the issue to pro-abortion Democrats is the key to victory.”
Olivia Gans Turner of the Virginia Society for Human Life talked about the pro-life importance of the state legislature before last night’s vote:
For two years under a radically pro-abortion governor and pro-abortion majority in our General Assembly Virginians watched as pro-life laws, that it took years to pass, were stripped away overnight. The celebrations led by pro-abortion legislators as the laws fell, were disheartening to say the least. Protective laws that gave women the vital information they needed about their unborn babies before having an abortion were tossed out by those same legislators who were backed by the abortion industry in Virginia, including Planned Parenthood and NARAL.
The pro-abortion majority in the House of Delegates and the Senate dismantled every rational protection that women had from the manipulation and lies of abortionists, including clinic regulations and the requirement that only licensed doctors be allowed to perform abortions. Their new rules even allow deadly chemical abortion drugs to be prescribed by nurse practitioners and sent through the mail!
That is why I say these elections matter as none before for unborn children in Virginia. If the pro-abortion majority is allowed to hold onto their power in the General Assembly House of Delegates this year there is absolutely no doubt that the last pro-life laws we have on the books, the Partial Birth Abortion Ban and the Parent’s Right to Know law (which requires that parents must consent before a minor daughter can have an abortion), will both be dismantled.
What’s more terrifying for pro-lifers, is that the same pro-abortion leadership will push forward their plan to have a “Right to Abortion Amendment” added to the Virginia Constitution. An amendment like this will immediately invalidate any remaining pro-life law, prevent any new laws from being passed and require that our taxes be used to fund all abortions under state-run health care plans and programs. Amendments like this have already had a chilling effect on pro-life legislation in other states, including New York and Vermont.
Fox News exit polling found that five percent of Virginia voters cited abortion as their top issue. These voters supported Glenn Youngkin over McAuliffe by a margin of 12 percent despite the fact that McAuliffe spent a reported $25 million on advertising which primarily emphasized his support for abortion on-demand. McAuliffe even campaigned at an abortion clinic that offers abortions up to 16 weeks of pregnancy.
Governor-elect Youngkin has outlined his pro-life policy commitments, which include advocating legislation to limit late-term abortions when unborn children can feel pain and working to stop taxpayer-funded abortions.
And while the Senate is tied, in VA the AG can vote to break ties, and we got him too.
A big break as the assembly approves the proposed redistricting maps.
