Safeway In Castro [San Francisco] Cuts Hours Due To ‘Off The Charts’ Shoplifting; ‘It’s Sad, Upsetting And Frustrating’ [Shoplifters who steal less than $950 at a time don't get prosecuted]

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) — Yet another major retailer in San Francisco has made the decision to close earlier due to excessive theft particularly at night, according to San Francisco Supervisor Rafael Mandelman.

The Castro Safeway on Market and Church Streets was open 24 hours, but that’s not the case any longer. Signs posted on its entrance state its new hours are 6 am to 9 pm, effective October 24.

Many shoppers were surprised to find that the Safeway they frequent at off-hours is cutting back.

“I feel like it’s definitely an inconvenience, not everybody can make it to the supermarket between those hours, so it’s a little frustrating, especially for me personally. I like to shop later on,” said Chris Rankins, who lives in the Castro.

Mandelman’s district includes the Market Street Safeway. He said the company reached out to him to discuss problems with theft.

“I think like a lot of retailers they’ve been experiencing increasing property crime and theft from their stores,” Mandelman said. “I think the last 6 months from what they say has been sort of – off the charts in terms of how bad it’s been. It’s sad, upsetting and frustrating.”

Mandelman said he’s now working on organizing a meeting with Safeway, San Francisco police and the district attorney.

“It’s an equity problem,” he said. “There’s a lot of low-income folks, seniors, folks with disability, who rely on that Safeway and other Safeways around the city.”

For now, Johnny Denham, who works at night, will have to change his routine.

“It’s better for me to come up here after work, go shopping and go home,” he said. “Now it’s like I either have to go shopping before work, or on my days off, which I really don’t like doing.”

Safeway did not immediately return KPIX 5’s request for comment.

Mandelman added that Safeway told him police rarely arrest anyone for a property crime, by the time they make it on the scene.

Move to a membership model... need a card to get in the door. Card has your contact info, credit card info, and SSN tied to it. No membership, no entrada.

That’s what happens when you legalize stealing.

San Francisco will have to eventually address this problem.

My prediction: they’ll pass a law making it difficult or impossible for stores to reduce hours or just close down. You know, something like “must give 180 days notice...”

There will be as much crime as people are willing to put up with.

The left would call your suggestion racist. After all, if you cannot reasonably expect minorities to be able to get an ID to vote, you shouldn't expect them to be able to get a shopping ID. Never mind you could make it free, sign up at the door, applied to all customers regardless of race...it would still be deemed racist.

“It’s an equity problem,”

LOL…the new universal excuse.

There is a LACK of equal, blind application of the law. Repeal the law that made this shoplifting legal, install a DA who will prosecute, give the police marching orders to stop it, and have the mayor put out the word this will not be tolerated and POOF! — problem solved.

Or should it be “POOFTER — problem solved”?

Question for Safeway management - which political party have you been supporting for the past 60 years?

Also - I am sure you have lobbyist in Sacramento, perhaps you should fire them and buy and new set.

The reporting on this is just breathtaking in it's perspective. How dare them shut down and inconvenience us due to crime and theft. Everyone is entitled to 24 hour service and thieves simply cannot be inconvenienced . Sadly, Fry's has come to the conclusion that the only way to limit the massive losses due to theft by restricting it's hours so it can lose money at a less rapid rate.

“There will be as much crime as people are willing to put up with.”

That’s a lot of crime.

There are the “virtuous” who would never dare try to stop a criminal.

Then there is the criminal class and their associates.

Finally, there is the mobile class. They won’t tolerate it, they’ll move to Idaho and vote for Democrats there.

It’s just an early form of reparations. People with self respect aren’t going to steal. People who have been convinced that Whitey is keeping them down will take full advantage of this new gift given to them by the democrats.

There was one video with a bunch of whitebread Whiteys standing in line to pay, while a “downtrodden” “oppressed” “victim” “poor” individual filled trash bags with goodies and wheeled the carriage out of the store.

Dem Whiteys shouldda been saying “I’m paying for that.”

I live in a small town in California. The police publish a CRIME BULLETIN each week on Facebook. When called to a location over shoplifting they generally catch the subject. They will issue a summons and then confiscate all the stolen property and return it to the store.

We don’t have the same problem as San Francisco (they have removed the incentive to steal).

As a side note most of those caught have drugs on them as well. They issue a summons and take the drugs.

I doubt those getting summons ever respond to them since there does not seem to be any real penalty for their behavior.

In California near large cities you will find “homeless” camps near the box stores. Makes it easy for them to maintain their lifestyle.
