Families in the 2015 Charleston, S.C., church massacre have settled with the Department of Justice (DOJ) for some $88 million over a faulty gun background check that allowed to the shooter to buy the firearm he used, the two sides announced Thursday.
The DOJ said in a statement that it settled with the 14 plaintiffs in the case, awarding between $6 million to $7.5 million for each of the nine people killed and $5 million for each survivor.
The survivors and family members first alleged in 2016 that FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Checks System (NICS) failed to prevent the sale of a gun to Dylann Storm Roof, who wasn’t allowed to have a firearm under federal law.

Doesn’t the D of Justus have immunity?
I suspect the Department of Justice actually wanted to give the church a whole lot more than $88 million. Out of guilt and for the purposes of social justice.
African American ....

“I hear a big cha-ching coming for every crime vic in the country now. Way to go Biden DOJ.”
Only if the victim is black and the shooter is a white supremist.
Agreed.
do the multiple white victims attacked daily and killed in this country ever get these huge settlements?
Upon learning this the lawyer for the family of one of the victims announced that he was gonna sue Shell Oil (ya,*that* Shell Oil) because they were one of the sponsors of the band's tour.
Looking at that case...and this one...and others...it blows my mind to know that lawyers haven't a clue as to why they're as hated as they are.
Better give them an additional $25 million each to compensate for historical black farm discrimination… whatever that is. Makes no difference if they are actually farmers.
“It’s “black”...with a small “b”.”
I was referencing from the viewpoint of the DOJ.

This is really interesting - it kind of follows the model that was used to attack the nuclear power industry. Let me explain - there is a “market” of sorts that determine the settlement value of liability cases. If defendants start making big payouts for a certain type of case, more of those types of cases will be filed because of the speculative settlement value. The more cases filed, the greater the burden on the targeted industry. Nuclear power plant siting was hit with every manner of litigation imaginable, so much so that the business of building them became not viable.
Many ‘Slades will be sold . . .
The Federal Tort Claims Act (FTCA) is an express waiver of sovereign immunity.
They also sued the local TV station reporting the news that night who were there when the fire started and they got millions.
