The reason nation states are so interested in quantum computers is to crack public-key encryption.

The factoring of large primes is one thing that quantum computers could do once the bugs are worked out.

Some public-key data can be decrypted now, but definitely NOT in real-time. The various intelligence agencies want to decrypt all web traffic in real-time.

Even with working quantum devices the scales will always tilt toward those who wish to keep secrets...quantum computing is not a magic wand that can decrypt all data.

Some forms of symmetric encryption are mathematically provable to be safe from quantum computer decryption.
