Could I ask on question of much better informed people here?

When EV availability started I heard someone interviewed who said “No, your regular socket for a reading lamp or a TV can’t be used. You have to have a big socket like the ones for a clothes dryer installed in your garage or wherever you run your power line for the car charge.”

Is that true or still true?

I did hear a person on a business meeting trip heading out of town with a rental EV was told “They have a row of chargers at the biggest parking structure downtown. You can plug it in there.”

Doubting if I’m better informed, but I took the bait.

Most EVs include an adaptor for charging at what is called “Level 1”, 120 VAC typical wall receptacle.
BUT IT IS SLOW! Charge all night and maybe enough for 50 miles.

Level 2 charger would plug into the same receptacle as an electric stover or dryer. Charge all night and perhaps 500 plus miles.

Level 3 is the commercial Tesla chargers and possibly 20 miles in one minute of charging.

Many variables, current available(amps), is the battery near full or empty, the temperature of the battery...

A regular wall socket can be used but it will take four days to charge your car from empty to full.

I have owned an EV the past few years. I plug in on a regular socket in my garage, that shares power with other devices (TV, garage opener, etc.). It's my daily driver, although I don't commute, and drive about 15 miles locally. Only need to charge once every couple weeks, overnight in the garage. When I go on 100 mile trips I charge it fully over a couple days (226 mile range). The 110v circuit is perfectly fine, and the trickle charge is better for the life of the battery. Also have a couple ICE cars, but they don't get much use.

The regular socket for a reading lamp can be used to charge and EV. The is called Level 1 charging. It is a very slow way to charge sometimes taking up to 20 hours for a full charge.

The big socket like for the clothes dryer is called level 2 charging. It is much faster than Level 1 taking 4 to 6 hours for a full charge. Usually used to charge over night.

Then is the Level 3 DC fast chargers. They can give a full charge to Tesla in as little as a half hour. There are thousands of Tesla Supercharger stations in the USA...but they only work on Teslas.
