Winter is approaching and many restaurants that have relied on outdoor dining to recoup some of their lost business during the pandemic will soon lose their lifeline as temperatures drop....
Restaurateurs across the country this week called on their cities' mayors to extend outdoor dining, warning them that many more closures could be imminent if they don't push for the measure, as the Delta variant compels the majority of patrons to steer clear of indoor dining rooms, new research shows. About 110,000 restaurants and bars have either temporarily or permanently closed during the pandemic, according to National Restaurant Association....
...Specifically, the association is calling on local authorities to extend the period during which outdoor dining is permitted, and to fund outdoor dining infrastructure, including the construction of outdoor seating areas and the purchase heating equipment...

A little common sense always goes a long way towards cutting thru the idiocy
Anyone with common sense could look around and see that people are NOT dropping dead in the streets, like during the Black Death
Anyone with common sense could put the daily “death counts” into perspective and calm down
But a lot of people today don’t have common sense, or if they do, they deliberately ignore it and believe the Big Media fear instead
FedGov must be laughing that so many people can be easily played
I personally have always thought that covid has never been a pandemic and that the reactions to it were way out of proportion. I don’t like masks but I wear one at work because it is required. I wash my hands all the freaking time. I even had covid as proven by 2 positive tests and my wife and daughter also tested positive in the same week so I know for damn sure I had it. Plus I was sick for a week. As for vaccination I waited a week to see if a bunch of people keeled over and when they didn’t I went and got my shots. I also got TDAP and flu shot and shingles and hepatitis B series first installment, and i got the “booster” last week. I still have another hep b shot coming up in November and I plan to go get the JandJ covid vaccine before December.
Vaccination or whatever they are doing that they are calling vaccination is mostly harmless. The reason for mandates is that the pharmaceutical companies held the vaccines back so Trump would not get credit and for that they will get to sell 2x as many doses: 1/3 more people than wanted it and a third dose for everyone. Trump would never have mandated them.
I am not a big fan of government bailouts, But if they have to fund some industry that would be very beneficial, it would be the restaurant and hospitality industry
My city used Federal CARES Act money to match restauranteurs for outdoor dining expenses, including outdoor heaters, seating, etc. In the grand scheme of all the CARES Act money sloshing around it was not very expensive.
What the heck were these people doing last year?
Extending local rules / permits / exceptions for outdoor dining is a complete no-brained.
When living in north central Florida, outdoor seating was mostly a desired everyday thing, like being seated on a patio deck. Now here recently in western Colorado, outdoor seating is in a plastic clear walled tent addition. Effectively adds seating area, but no way it is ‘healthier’ or safer. (Condensation on the ceiling) But it does allow more people to otherwise be there, albeit ignoring fire code safety, and bathroom convenience.
Why are the vaxxed so fearful….
Because in their hearts , they know the injections don’t work.
Vaccination or whatever they are doing that they are calling vaccination is mostly harmless…….
Apparently for you. For some, many perhaps, me personally, not helpful. Still got Covid twice after Moderna series fout months before, and lingering effects of vaxx that showed before illness.
So , it may appear to be safe for you, SO FAR.
Exactly. If/when it doesn’t make sense for them to continue the outdoor service, they will suspend it for the season.
Patrons still fear indoors but don’t fear who prepares their food ?.
At the height of this thing last year Gavin Newsome wasn’t afraid to dine inside, with family and friends, with no social distancing and no masks.
Why should anyone else?
Not me. I got the first shot back in December of last year and the second in January.
I wasn’t told I had to or lose my job and I work in a hospital.
I made the choice to get it, on my own.
I got the Pfizer. I’m still on two feet and breathing.
Glad that you are doing well.
Probably time for your booster shot though.
I have no idea if you would be allowed to go to a restaurant in my county without a booster shot. (I’m guessing you would be.)
The county mandate only says that one must be “Fully Vaccinated” and show their vaccination card. No where in the mandate does it state what “Fully Vaccinated” actually is. I’m guessing (just a guess) that it means one shot of J&J or two shots of Pfizer or Moderna. Although I have no reason not to believe that they won’t add one or twenty booster shots in order to be “fully vaccinated”.
One can also show a negative Covid test within the last 72 hours in order to get into a restaurant.
I’m glad that we have a choice on whether we want to get the vaccine or not. I’m glad that you were able to get yours in a timely manner. Months ago when folks were so excited to say they were vaccinated I shared in their joy. (Oddly, some of those still remain isolated, fearful of being with others, stay shut up in their homes, etc. So sad to see them being held hostage.)
Fauci is also huge on choice in the matter: I can’t find the quote at the moment, but it was something along the lines of “You have a choice. You can get vaccinated and work or you can lose your job.”
Thank you. I’m not getting a booster.
Funny thing though. When I got the second dose I was asked by the nurse, with a straight face “Are you pregnant or nursing?’’
I’m a 65 year old, white male.
I said “Ah, ... no. No I’m not pregnant’’.
Hmm - reminds me of the story of a transgender male (”fake male”) that went to the hospital for stomach pains. They did all sorts of tests, figured it was some sort of digestive thing and gave “him” some stuff to treat it.
Turns out it was the baby - died in a miscarriage. :(
Never said they should, but I’m not going to take an experimental vax with a poor side-effect profile just to eat inside a restaurant. I’d rather dine outside than do that.
I get all that. I’ve seen the shanty look. And they butting out into the street and the sidewalks. Those are local planning issues. On subject, however, a restaurant should be able to continue outside dining as a choice, not just simply restricted.
