The Teachers Union's Fumbled Play

I believe it was Gaylord Nelson, then governor of Wisconsin, who first recognized the right of public employees to collectively bargain, and it was another governor of Wisconsin, Scott Walker, who decades later under state law virtually eliminated it with wonderful results for teachers, local governments, and pupils.

Our reforms in Wisconsin -- known as Act 10 -- changed that by all but eliminating collective bargaining for government employees. This puts the taxpayers and the officials they elect back in charge of their state and local governments, instead of unelected union bureaucrats.

The teachers unions have been one of the greatest disasters for American education, ever.

I was fortunate enough to have been educated in one of the last schools to become unionized in Wisconsin.

Nelson was a disaster as governor.

Same here. I remember when I was in engineering school at the UW in the late sixties and the teachers in Madison called a strike and unionized. I predicted that it would be the end of quality education.

I was right!

It has been observed often that the notion of public employees (read “government” employees) having unions is absurd. When the union negotiates with an elected government, in whose election they have participated, the union effectively sits on both sides of the negotiating table. Government employees should be forbidden to unionize for this reason.

I'm sure others here will dispute this, but I believe that the teacher's exemption from the draft is what led to this. By the mid 70s, all those left wing young men who had become teachers in the 60s solely to avoid the draft had been gaining seniority and rising in the school districts and in the union. There was no original *calling* to teach, but once in that profession, they saw the open, un-defended ground in front of them and climbed the bureaucratic ladders. By the time the disastrous Carter admin. took over, their dreams became reality.

I as born & raised in Wisconsin.

Went to ONE ROOM grade school-—no running water-water brought in every school day in 10 gallon milk can. 2 Outhouses behind school.

14 kids 8 grades teacher with 2 years of college.

High school was larger-—under 600 kids in 4 grades.

NO UNIONS.

I would NOT trade ANY of that education for ANYTHING.

ALL public school teachers unions should be abolished.

The well being of the student is no longer their concern...Commie indoctrination is their most important function now.

Very similar to my experience, except I missed the one-room school house by a couple of years.

High school about the same size.

Your point about draft evaders is noted.

It is the perfect system, school boards present inflated budgets that are randomly approved by voters (it’s for the chuldrun) and a great percentage of those TAXPAYER dollars go to the Unions and to Demoncrat politicians. This MUST STOP. No contributions to any political party should be allowed from taxpayer dollars, PERIOD. Raise your own damn money.

Under Jimmy Carter, now the third worst President ever. Zero and Bidawee have displaced him from the bottom.
