OAKLAND (CBS SF) — A decorated, retired Oakland police captain, Ersie Joyner, was shot in an robbery attempt Thursday afternoon at gas station off Interstate 980 in Oakland.
Ersie Joyner was at Highland Hospital being treated for multiple gunshot wounds, Alameda County Sheriff spokesman Sgt. Ray Kelly confirmed to KPIX. A law enforcement source confirmed that Joyner was out of surgery and recovering in the ICU at Highland Hospital after being shot six times.
From start to finish, the incident lasted less than a minute.
Surveillance video shows Joyner pumping gas when three men rush him from a vehicle on the other side of the pump. One suspect grabs the cellphone Joyner was holding and other suspect appear to be digging in Joyner’s pockets, then pulls a chain off his neck. Joyner does not struggle with the men but, as the suspects open Joyner’s car’s doors and one appears to take his backpack, Joyner pulls out a pistol and opens fire.
The video shows Joyner shooting and killing one suspect who died at the scene, while two others fled in a black Nissan sedan.
Joyner served with the Oakland police department for 28 years. Currently, Joyner is a security consultant for several cannabis businesses in Oakland. Investigators believe it was a targeted attack.

I saw a beautiful video last week, just lovely like pure ballet. This guy was standing outside talking to a friend when a thug jumped out of a car with a gun ready to rob him. Before the thug could even lift up his gun, the guy who was talking whipped out his gun in a flash and started blasting away hitting the thug multiple times. The beauty of it brought a tear too my eye, it was so dear.
He had my respect until the marijuana.
It’s illegal from a federal standpoint, so it’s a cash only business.

Lucky for him he’s black otherwise you can damn well bet there would be riots and these same people praising him would be calling for murder charges to be filed, 100% guaranteed.

True, but this happened in California. It’s easy for well-connected folks like this captain to get a gun permit. Not so easy if you’re just an average guy.

You gotta admit a former police captain now a security consultant for several cannabis businesses is a little ironic. I used to arrest them, now I protect them.
It says it was targeted. Likely they thought he was carrying large sums of cash. In the pot business with it being illegal federally, banks will not do business with them so they have to get creative in how they deal with cash.
