China pulled Boston Celtics games from the streaming service Tencent on Thursday after center Enes Kanter protested Beijing's repressive rule over Tibet and called President Xi Jinping a "brutal dictator."
Wearing a T-shirt bearing an image of the Dalai Lama, Kanter in a Facebook video post called for China to "free Tibet," saying the Communist Party is carrying out a campaign of "cultural genocide" in the region.
"Shame on the Chinese government," Kanter said. "The Chinese dictatorship is erasing Tibetan identity and culture."
Kanter's remarks further complicate the NBA's relationship with China. In recent years, the league has faced growing pressure to sever commercial ties with the regime for its growing list of human rights abuses, including ethnic and religious oppression of Tibetan Buddhists and Uyghur Muslims. The league's relationship with Beijing has been strained since October 2019, when Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey tweeted in favor of protests in Hong Kong against Xi's regime.
Los Angeles Lakers star forward LeBron James criticized Morey at the time for the tweet, saying he was "not really educated on the situation."

The pusillanimous NBA hierarchy will come down on Kanter hard. Can't have a player interfering with the Chinese bucks.
Good on Kanter. Now don’t apologize. “For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” Mark 8:6
The NBA isn’t going to like this! Get the popcorn ready.
China is getting nearly as bad as the US is with censorship.
Free Hong Kong!
(Need photo replacement for Dali Lama)
This is too funny, in that literally every NBA player now has their finger on the NBA self-destruct button.
China offers large revenues to the NBA, but the political and compliance terms are absolutely draconian. The NBA have made a deal with the devil.
Its the same thing with every foreign company that chooses to operate in China. You become their prison-byatch.
Can’t these players learn to stay the F out of politics?
Good Bless him.
China’s history is full of censorship and actually cruel acts against any who do not hold the leaderships line. It’s ingrained in the leaderships very being.
If XI could get away with it he’d be calling himself “Emperor of the World”....
The NBA, Hollywood... you name the industry / business. If you want to do business in China, you do it with the permission and per the rules of the CCP.
The anti-popovich/kerr/james
...........and in the course of that lawsuit, one motion for production will be the contract between the NBA and their Communist Partners.
Within hours, it will be leaked to the press and within minutes relevant and juicy portions of it will start showing up on the net.
Most likely the contract will prove the NBA’s relationship with China puts the communist regime first proving that the whole NBA just needs to move to China.
LeBron James and “educated” in the same sentence. I don’t think so.
FREE TIBET!
