was bombarded with criticism on Tuesday for labeling late Secretary of State Colin Powell a 'RINO' who 'made plenty of mistakes' in a statement one day after Powell's death of COVID-19 complications at age 84.
In an email full of mixed messages, Trump commented on the posthumous praise Powell has been receiving since Monday morning and said he hoped he'd get the same treatment 'one day.'
'Wonderful to see Colin Powell, who made big mistakes on Iraq and famously, so-called weapons of mass destruction, be treated in death so beautifully by the Fake News Media,' Trump said in a statement through his Save America PAC.
'Hope that happens to me someday. He was a classic RINO [Republican In Name Only], if even that, always being the first to attack other Republicans. He made plenty of mistakes, but anyway, may he rest in peace!'
People across the political spectrum seized on the comment. Trump was accused of being 'jealous' of the posthumous media coverage Powell was receiving.
Others attacked the ex-president for 'dancing' on Powell's 'grave' and lashing out because he's insecure.
Trump's insulting comments came barely more than 24 hours after Powell's death.
'So how does this statement from the former President of the United States make you feel as an American?' Democratic Rep. Ted Lieu of California said on Twitter.
Political scientist Larry Sabato not only condemned Trump but also members of the ex-president's party who 'keep silent' on his Powell comments.
'No decent human being will defend Trump’s malevolent, spiteful, narcissistic statement on Gen. Powell. But those Republicans who keep silent today will speak volumes about how Trump has debased them and their once-great party. Candidates with no courage never deserve our votes,' Sabato wrote on Twitter.

Would you be more comfortable with a girly man at democrat underground?
You can credit Affirmative Action for Powell’s rise!
While tragic, it should be noted that the decedent was nearly universally known among classmates as a pr**k and first-class a**hole.
So, what happened?
Not surprisingly, those in class begin to tearfully eulogize and memorialize the jerk.
A fellow classmate, and one of my best friends, finally stood up and chastised everyone, saying he couldn’t believe how everyone who thought the guy was a jerk when he was alive all of a sudden found themselves in a state of mourning and grief.
It was a bold move, but I regret not having the intestinal fortitude to stand up and applaud his having the guts to be real.
In my mind, PDJT did the same as regards Colin Powell.
He never said he was glad Powell died, he just reminded everyone of what he did when he was alive, lest they forget.
Did death somehow turn this turncoat RINO into something respectable?
“ ‘No decent human being will defend Trump’s malevolent, spiteful, narcissistic statement on Gen. Powell.”
What did he say that was malevolent? Powell was a Republican in name only. He called himself a Republican then he supported and worked for democrats. He did everything he could do on the public stage to bash the Republican candidate ant there Republican president, Trump.
He was the definition of a RINO. He was not ashamed of it.
Unfortunately, President Trump has a history of engaging his mouth (tweeting fingers) long before his brain weighs the pros and cons.
I can remember the excitement I felt the day he was elected and then telling my brother who brought me to the team, now he needs to smash his cell phone or tape his thumbs.
He accomplished most everything he ran on which in an of itself was totally awesome. The one area that I found him lacking was his ability to rise above all the noise in the main stream pres and “lead” the entire country.
Buckling my seat belt!
People are afraid of the media.
If I die I couldn’t care less what is said.
Colin Powell was Deep State. He did what he did.
Anyone besides me ever notice the celebrations and festivities break out among the liberal intelligentsia whenever a conservative dies?
The reams of absolute filth they spew on dead conservatives?
Trump is a bull in the china shop so he is what he is, but I’m not gripping about his latest attack when I’m paying nearly $5.00 a gallon for gas, my food prices are getting higher and my country is being destroyed from within. A few sharp tongued barbs from Donald Trump are nothing compared to the destruction caused by Powell and his Deep State ilk toward this country.
True. But really why speak ill of the man the day after his death? No class. But I don’t think “The Donald” ever had much. Typical New York Citian. Don’t take crap from anyone including the toilet seat.
He wasn’t killed by covid complications, he was dying of cancer and a mild case of the flu would have done him in. He died of complications of cancer.
Early on we had a women in our small county listed as a covid death. She was terminally ill with a year to live. She died in month 10 of that year. All because of covid.
Not mouthing off instantly has never been a Donald virtue.
I try to not berate the dead, particularly during the grieving period...no matter how disgusting the dead were while alive. Their relatives deserve a period to grieve.
Even with that disgusting piece of traitorous trash, Juan “Songbird” McLame, the worst I said shortly after he died was “may God have mercy on his soul.”
Having said that, once that reasonable grieving period is finished, if the media attempt to canonize the departed, then it’s time to point out the truth. As an example, now that the grieving period is done, I don’t think it inappropriate to point out to point out Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s real opinion of Roe v Wade: “Frankly, I had thought that at the time Roe was decided, there was concern about population growth and particularly growth in populations that we don’t want to have too many of. So that Roe was going to be then set up for Medicaid funding of abortion.”
Having said that, I understand why Mr. Trump would not wait so long. He is not so naive as to think that the celebratory editorials have not already been written to mark his passing. Just as he had no “honeymoon” period with the media at the beginning of his presidency, he won’t get a suitable grieving period when he passes. So why should he follow that norm when his enemies die?
Yeh, Mr Trump do everything these dip hole critics say and the pig shittites will respect and love you!
These same people were dancing for joy when news came out about Rush and his cancer. Freeking hypocrites. Colin Powell was a traitorous RINO. Just like George W Bush and John McCain. I’m tired of turning the other cheek.
Piss on these people!.
Donald J. Trump has built his reputation for telling us just what he thinks of something or somebody. Not like it was any surprise that Colin Powell was in fact the epitome of a RINO. Most of us already knew and understood that, at some level.
Trump is absolutely correct.
Rush had class and to suggest he would berate the man day after his death is something he would have never done.
You are a fool.
Do you know what that means?
