?.here is an idea. hire extra people...” I’m sure the port operators know this obvious solution, but the ILA and other unions elsewhere won’t let them. Lots of unions faced with company moves and automation, have agreed to these obvious productivity moves in other industries, but you can’t move a port, and automation , even in socialist countries has already happened; but not in LA and NYC/NJ.

Is there a drug test for these port workers?
I know one of the problems getting CDL qualified workers is that all the young-uns are smoking weed.

Great time for a bunch of patriots to dress like Indians and dump those cargo containers into the bay …

Newsom & AB 5 won’t allow owner-operators into the state & no truck older than 3 years old.

Everything that is at the port, docked outside the port, in transit to the port, and being loaded (and most of what is being produced right now) in Asia to ship soon is already booked, paid for, contracted, scheduled. Ain’t gonna be no extra costs for anybody for the remainder of the year.

They can keep the lights on 24/7 if they want but nobody is paying more for what is already contracted and paid for. The freight fowarders, the customs brokers - they aren’t going to work 24/7. The truck drivers can’t run 24/7 I don’t know if they did lift some restrictions but they are supposed to time out after 12 hours work. In any case they need sleep, food, breaks. The trucks could theoretically run with multiple drivers; if you can find the drivers; and if you can pay them to work the graveyard shift. But again, ain’t none of this is going to be paid for on anything already in the works.

Maybe March of 2022, after the Chinese Lunar New Year, they can start tacking on another 10% increase in costs.

Running the ports 24 X 7 won’t help. There is nowhere to ship the product to. Truckers aren’t going to haul the freight if there is no one to unload it. They don’t want to spend days or weeks waiting to get unloaded.

I’m told the warehouses are full.

The unions aren’t the biggest impediment to automation. The real problem is the enormous cost of automating a marine terminal. One of the major East Coast ports spent half a billion dollars to do a fully automated terminal expansion a few years ago, and to this day they’re still not sure if they’ll generate enough additional business to recover the cost of those improvements.

The only thing Newsom knows how to move is expensive wine from the glass to his lips.

That should help reduce the homelessness crisis in Los Angeles.

One problem I have been hearing is there is a shortage of containers in Asia. They ship 'em full. We ship 'em back empty. No money in shipping empty containers so they either store them 4 high for miles and miles, or, the next guy who has to ship from Asia covers the cost of returning an empty shipload of containers.

The most powerful nation in the world can’t unload ships in its most important port.
This type of dis function has not been part of who we are as a nation.

Here’s a thought that would blow away everyone .

Have Mr Biden reach out to President Trump to solve this national problem.
Wow just think how that could raise Biden’s stature .

“President Trump, you have unique skills of getting things dine in the business world . I want to enlist your help to solve this issue”

Yes I know it won’t happen, but just think if it did happen . The issue would be fixed in 2 weeks and Biden and Trump would both look good.

I think this is the real bottleneck. The state of California has made trucking very challenging.

Well, just wave your hands in the air and make it happen then. (snigger) You know, magic unicorn crystals will make it happen simply because you want it.
