I agree that it's much easier to drive to your destination. However, at 77 years old, I've found that it's easier for me to take Amtrak from Salem, OR to Seattle rather than driving the I-5. I used to do it regularly, but the I-5 has gotten so difficult for me, especially through the unending construction through Tacoma, and then - Seattle traffic.

What makes it an adventure (ha!) is that I have to drive to Salem, leave my car there. Then upon arrival in Seattle, take an Uber to the Washington State Ferry terminal, and take the ferry to Bainbridge Island, where my daughter picks me up. Then the reverse on my way back home.

Certainly, trains work for some - just as other options work for some.
It’s this urban-progressives attitude of “eliminate cars completely! trains for everyone!” that most of us have a problem with.
And, alas, insofar as trains work well for some, trains need darned near everyone to use them to work beyond a pretty limited scale (which you happened to be in, so it worked for you).
