Shipping costs are surging around the globe, causing the price of sending a container from Asia to the West Coast to increase many times over.

When Donald Trump was president in 2020, the price to ship a container from Asia to California was $3,800. That price spiked to $17,000 in October of 2021, according to supply chain technology company Freightos.

Don't worry. Brandon will fix it!

Scranton Brandon's a hands-on guy
He'll promise the moon and a bright blue sky
Just give'im the trillions to make it work
You won't pay a dime he says with a smirk.

Just pass the bill and you'll see what's in it
Socialist heaven served up in a minute
Never you mind that your worth's now trash
The reset's a gas 'cause you'll have no cash.

Too small a profit margin.

China subsidized a lot of shipping from their manufacturers and they manufacture 96% of containers as well as having the second largest fleet. They dominate shipping from their ports to the United States. Perhaps there has been policy changes, or maybe its just the massive energy shortages and covid impact that is changing the math on this.

Why are we having this problem?

Here’s how the state of California views it.

I could understand a similar increase in shipping costs. But 450%? Need more information.

The cargo ships sitting in port for weeks at a time cannot help but drive up costs. California's ridiculous "global-warming" regulations have made it impossible to unload ships in a timely manner. Someone must pay for those idle ships and crew.

Yes, it’s a gigantic mess. And we’re all going to pay for it.

How anyone can say, with a straight face, inflation is going to drop even in the year 2022, is simply being willfully ignorant!!

It will take YEARS to undo a 347% INCREASE in costs which occurred in less than a year!!

And this is just ONE of those costs! How many OTHER COSTS (fleet fuel, priority shipments, etc.) have also shot through the roof?!?

There is going to a big problem for ALUMINUM manufactures everywhere in the world.

You need magnesium to make aluminum. The plants in China that make magnesium are shutting down. Most aluminum makers gewt their magnesium from China. This will affect the price of anything made from aluminum(car parts, airplane parts, Bud cans, etc.)

I wonder about alternatives? I mean there are too many aluminum cans around, maybe something like something I found, googling around, called a cartocan? They are pretty, and you can do nice graphics on them. No idea about the cost, but if the aluminum cans are getting scarce and pricey, might be time to switch to another container, especially since you could sell it as sustainable.

I am sure that aluminum recycling will increase if the value of the scrap goes up.

However, I don’t think Boeing uses sheets of aluminum to build airplanes that are made from recycled beverage cans. I could be wrong.

Well if you could incentivize the beverage industry to use alternative packaging, that would drive down the revenue for the lower grade aluminum manufacturers, and since so many of those are in communist countries, would that be a bad thing? We have aircraft grade aluminum manufacturers in America, and we do have a large manufacturer of magnesium. There are also suppliers in Brazil, plus your good shipping routes there are all to ports on the East Coast.
