Coal-fired electricity generation climbed this year in the U.S. for the first time since the Obama administration, spurred by spiking natural gas prices, a setback for the Biden climate agenda and a sign that the president’s drilling crackdown may be backfiring.
The U.S. Energy Information Administration said Monday that electricity generated by coal-fired plants is expected to jump by 22% in 2021 over last year’s levels for the first year-over-year increase since 2014.
The reason: the rising cost of natural gas, which began climbing in April and hit a 13-year high this month, fueled by pent-up pandemic demand that has overtaken production.
“The U.S. electric power sector has been generating more electricity from coal-fired power plants this year as a result of significantly higher natural gas prices and relatively stable coal prices,” the EIA said in its October short-term energy outlook.
Given that natural gas emits 50% to 60% less carbon dioxide in combustion than coal, the uptick in coal-fired generation represents a move in the wrong direction for President Biden. Reducing greenhouse gas emissions to combat climate change is the cornerstone of his agenda.
Coal is also making a comeback in China and Europe. The transition to green energy has exacerbated an energy crunch in some European nations.
“It’s no secret that the cleanest, most reliable fuel — nuclear — was murdered by the greens,” Clarice Feldman said in an Oct. 10 op-ed in the American Thinker. “Then natural gas, the second cleanest, became their target, so now many places are desperate for coal, the dirtiest option.”

I think it’s genetically impossible for a liberal to understand cause and effect. I’m series.
I’m sure someone in the WH will suggest closing down coal mines due to this news.
And now the nuclear power plants are being touted as “Clean Energy”. LOL.
Jackson Browne is “Deeply Saddened”. LOL
There’s been some relief on the gas price lately. It’s down about 7%. Whether that will affect coal use I don’t know as it may be temporary and is based on recent winter weather forecasts which change all the time.
“Isn’t natural gas easier and more plentiful to bring to market?”
Gas supply is down due to less production and transport is more difficult, coal is easier to move than LNG.
“Wasn’t it during Jimmy Carter’s Presidency that heating costs sky-rocketed, and people went out in droves, and bought kerosene heaters?”
Yeah, and I remember some people died because they didn’t know you have you keep some windows open when you do that.
“I don’t recall any other energy crisis occurring until the current one Biden has created.”
You forgot about oil at $147 a barrel and gas over $4 during GW Bush? Everybody traded their trucks for econoboxes, losing thousands to save a few hundred on gas and then oil went from $147 to $27 and were screwed double. I tried to warn people but you can’t talk to panicked short-term thinkers which is most Americans when things like that happen.

That’s the plan.
The Jimmy Carter years were a TON of fun energy-wise. /sarc
The big lie that carbon dioxide is a pollutant continues.
I remember Obama's $5,000 cash incentive to buy a new car. I've been retired for almost 20 years, so about the only places I go these days are to my doctor appointments and the grocery store. I visit my youngest son in Indiana once a year, visit my oldest son who lives less than two hours away, about 3-4 times a year, and my sister-in-law and niece who also live about 2 hours away, only once or twice a year. I fill my gas tank up maybe once a month. I feel bad for anybody that has to drive any distance to commute to work, or spend time on the road ferrying their kids back and forth for sports practice, games, etc. My niece and her husband have 3 of their four kids who play both soccer and Lacrosse. They are constantly on the go, even for out-of-state soccer tournaments. Makes me glad I don't have any grandchildren, because I'd have probably ended up paying for most of it.
When did they invent N2 and O2 scrubbers?
“The big lie that carbon dioxide is a pollutant continues.”
Yeah, if only people could talk to plants.
Greta is apoplectic.
Whatever gave you that idea?
“Under my plan of a cap and trade system, electricity rates would necessarily skyrocket.” — Barack Obama, January 17, 2008, San Francisco Chronicle interview
Meanwhile, in China:
What "pent-up pandemic demand" are they talking about? The problem is production and the politics that has hindered it as in coal, crippled it as in nuclear. The bill is now due. What we will hear in order to insulate the politicians from the consequences of their own actions are the familiar exhortations to cut use, to cut comfort, to shut up and freeze. Turn down that thermostat, put on a sweater, and be happy. Misery is virtue.
At this rate we will be using old tires soon!
Unexpectedly. LOL.
