It is the sixth most visited unit of the National Park System and the premier inland water recreation area in the west.
February 1935 Lake begins to fill to 708.70 feet
July 1941 Lake Mead reaches 1220.40 feet
March 1956 Lake Mead drops to 1083.57 feet
July 1983 Lake Mead reaches 1225.44 feet (highest point)
June 2015 Lake Mead reaches 1074.71 feet

The peeps in LV can just condense H2O from the local air.

The Oceans still evaporate prodigious quantities of H20 every day and send it all over NA.

Las Vegas is only allowed 300,000 acre feet of water per year. California takes 7,000,000+ and dumps 5 million of that growing grass in the deserts to send alfalfa to places like Saudi Arabia. Las Vegas is the world leader in water recycling second only to Israel. Every drop of water that hits a drain in Las Vegas is recycled back to lake mead and used again. Vegas is allowed 300,000 acre feet per year they actually consumption use 200,000 and bank the rest in lake mead for another day. Vegas could double in size and not exceed it’s allocated water amounts. Vegas has 40,000,000+ visitors per year yet casino’s only use 1% of Nevada’s lake mead allotment again world leading water conservation and recycling.

Why is California allowed that much water?
In may ways, they can save more, and do the desalination things. plus stop the delta waste!
Nevada really cannot get water from anywhere else, and so does AZ.
The Colorado agreement should be re-negotiated, to directed the resource where is the most needed. Some of the old water rights should be bought off.

Global warming does not contribute to water shortage or forest fires. Government does!
Global warming is the convenient straw man for a lot of government inaction, ignorance and impotence.

The Colorado River compact of 1922 plus amendments to that compact over the years is why California has first rights and the largest share. The whole compact should be thrown out and renegotiated. It was set based on river flows that were abnormally high so there is always going to be a shortage. It should be illegal to grow grass in the deserts that needs five feet of water per year to grow where the evaporation rate is 50 inches per year alone. California should be forced into the 21st century. Ask the Israelis to come over and show them how to drip irrigate and grow water saving crops. Every water intensive crop should only be grown in the Eastern part of the country east of the 100 long line where there is at least 30” of rain or more per year.

You know. It aint gonna matter. By this time next year we will be lucky if we are not ruled by the Red Chinese.

They are going to move. And they will move before the next election. Whether it be before the 2022 or the 2024 is a matter for discussion.

“Vegas has 40,000,000+ visitors per year yet casino’s only use 1% of Nevada’s lake mead allotment.”

That is because much of the drinking water is trucked in.

Vegas can NOT double in size. They WILL run out of water. Unless the heavens open up and pour down.

CAL has all the water it needs..just to the west of them.

BTW, why is it San Diego County has a water surplus and the rest of the state does not?

Vegas has never trucked water in they get water from three intakes at lake mead. Obviously you have never lived in Las Vegas. Outlying areas if Clark County do get some water from the deep aquifer under the Las Vegas Valley. Less than 10% of Clark County water is aquifer based. Vegas has banked nearly 200,000 acre feet per year for the last ten years in lake mead should they need it. The 1922 Colorado River compact allows Nevada 300,000 acre feet per year of consumptive use. Vegas recycles so much water that they get a credit in lake mead every year and have for the last ten. I love it when people who have no clue what they are talking about bash Vegas. They are second only to Israel in water recycling percentage. It is absolutely impressive engineering that the casino’s on the strip see 40,000,000 people per year and use 1% of the water. There has never been trucked in water to the casino’s they by law must use city water or their own shallow wells which are nonpotable water used for cooling needs.

Yes, That’s my point.
The desalinization technology is getting pretty good by now.
What is in the way are those environmentalists idiots, who worry that there will be too much salt in the ocean.
BTW, if they are so concern about ocean rise, they should be all for taking some of this excess water and put it into some use.
On the other hand, NV is pretty landlocked. I do not see they could do that. Especially since all new pipelines are banned now.

If the Hoover Dam hadn’t been built in the 1930’s there would NOT be a lake Mead.

Vegas has been continued to be allowed to over build, much like Phoenix has, and will face extreme shortages in the every near future.

Back when the wife and I first moved out here to NW AZ, there were virtually NO homes near the Rail Road Pass gap from Henderson to Boulder City. Now it is built up all the way from the RR Pass to Henderson. Hell, there wasnt any housing from where the 215 now cuts off towards the Airport.

I worry about over building here also since this community does not have any access to CO River water. Right now the estimates are that we can sustain the population but...

Yet when monsoons come..all that water is left to go. Millions of gallons of it. The greatest falsehood is that it recharges the aquifer. Very little does. 90% of that gets evaporated back into the air.
