Alaskans get annual boost of free money from oil wealth

JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) — What was once a joyous fall rite in Alaska has become another thing for people to bicker about — the amount of money residents receive from the state’s oil wealth.

Checks of $1,114 are expected to be paid to about 643,000 Alaskans, beginning this week.

People use the money in different ways, including for vacations, electronics, savings or college funds or necessities. In places like rural Alaska, the money can help with the high costs of fuel and food.

Joe Manning, who manages the Alaskan Kush Co., a marijuana business, also is planning sales and hoping for a bump in business at the shop in downtown Juneau as dividends go out. He said there was an influx in sales earlier this year when federal pandemic relief checks were paid.

Manning said he worked as a chef before the pandemic but changed careers last year. He said restaurant work, including the long hours, took a toll on his body and that he’s happy with the move, which has allowed him advancement opportunities with the cannabis operation.

He said he usually tries to spend much of his dividend locally. He said he sees the dividend as a “cherry on the top” and a way to help stimulate the economy.

We lived in Alaska for 25 years and those checks came in mighty handy.

Yo, Alaskans, just imagine what you would have gotten
had Trump still been in office and oil and gas was
still flowing!!!

Be sure to thank JoeBrandan when you vote next time.

So if Alaskans get “free money” from oil revenue, the AP believes they don’t deserve it.

However.

If ‘undocumented’ aliens get “free” tax payer money from the Federal Government, they are all smiles pats on the back atta boys go for its yeas lots of whoop whoops and cheers.

It’s not worth $1,114 to live in Alaska.

I’m sure that one nice month is beautiful...

And if you don’t hit a tanning booth, you’ll probably shoot yourself or drink yourself to death.

and more than a 1000 people are “missing” every year like clockwork consistently. A majority of the state is uninhabited.

10 months of good sledding weather, but two months of black flies.....

Just kidding though, wish I had an adventurous wife; would have moved their years ago and given it a try.

It depends, of course - Anchorage, Fairbanks and similar places aren't too much higher than the lower 48. However, Southeast Alaska (Juneau, Ketchikan, Sitka) are even more expensive because you can't get there by road - has to be ship or airplane. All of their groceries come in by barge from Seattle.
Places like Nome (no road, no harbor, just gold) and Kotzebue are off the charts and the wages are commensurate.
We bought a house in Juneau in 1986 for 90K during a major downturn and 20 years later sold it for 300K.

Here is the weekly flyer from the Fred Meyer store in Fairbanks. The prices are only slightly higher than the nicer big chain stores here in NC.

I think I would enjoy a place like Alaska.

I’m tired of all of this sunshine, heat and humidity. I’m sick of constant yard work.

The idea of darkness and cold appeals to me.

The Russians wish they still owned Alaska, I guarantee it. It was a steal at 7.2 million in 1867, and it almost didn't happen. They have the actual check at the state museum in Juneau, along with Seward's desk.

During the summer in Fairbanks, folks put aluminum foil over their bedroom windows for some darkness. Not necessary in winter, of course.

I've never visited Alaska, but hope to.

I have spent time in far northern communities in Canada. Fly in villages in the Far North. Life there is a challenge.

Can't wait for New Hampshire to unleash the maple syrup annual benefit.

Is the $1,150 dispensed regardless of means testing or other need based criteria?
