During the summer in Fairbanks, folks put aluminum foil over their bedroom windows for some darkness. Not necessary in winter, of course.

Lived there through high school and college. We just lined thin plywood with old army blankets and stuck them in the windows. Nice and dark. Tourists always complained they couldn’t sleep.
