Too many Republicans misunderstand Reagan’s legacy
washingtonpost ^ | 10/12/2021 | Henry Olsen

Republicans debating what they should stand for often invoke Ronald Reagan as the ideal standard-bearer for the party. It’s a shame, then, that so many of them misunderstand the man.

Reagan’s legacy is often articulated as a simple, policy-focused creed. Former Wisconsin governor Scott Walker immediately summarized that creed during a recent interview: “limited government, low taxes, strong national defense.” But Walker — who now heads the Young America’s Foundation, which owns the Reagan Ranch and the president’s boyhood home — also noted that these are timeless principles rather than ironclad prescriptions.

Didn't he and his policies defeat the Soviet Union? And in spite of the Democrats fighting him at the time. And it happened peacefully and didn't result in world-wide nuclear war and the extermination of humanity.

I'd say that that was major accomplishment.

Stupid article attempts to romneyize Ronald Reagan and use the dumb new scrubbed version of Reagan to isolate Trump supporters.

Totally what I'd expect from a WaPo article on Reagan.

Here’s my take. Reagan stood for a return to a common sense, conservative, and nationalist populism. He wasn’t for endless tax cuts, slashing Social Security, free trade with China, or endless foreign wars. None of this. he was for traditional values, national pride, and peace through strength. And he governed that way.

The decade of the 1980s was as close to perfect as a nation can hope for.

Sadly, the dream abruptly ended when Bush, the corporate globalist, took over. We had no idea at the time...

Most of the elected GOP are really just Assistant Democrats.

We have a LOT of House and Senate cleaning to do.

Flimsey Grahamnesty, Micro Rubio, Hoeven, Tillis, Cornyn, Lankford, Inhofe, Scott, Scott, Romney, McConnell, Cassidy, Thune, Ernst, Boozman, Murkowsky, Wicker, Hyde-Smith, Shelby, Blunt, Sasse, Toomey, Rounds, Portman, Burr, Lee, Capito, Crapo, Cramer, Barrasso, Risch, Sullivan, Moran and Collins are ALL Bush League Republicans

And that’s just the Senate, there are 145 House members that voted for Liz Cheney in Feb. to lead them (away from MAGA)

Re-electing Assistant Democrats has put us in this hole.

I have a strong affection for Reagan but he made two big mistakes: George Bush and amnesty for illegals. We continue to pay for both.

Was Bush a “mistake”, or a requirement from the powers that be?

Good question. Maybe the amnesty was likewise a requirement.
