SACRAMENTO, Calif. — California on Saturday became the first state to say large department stores must display products like toys and toothbrushes in gender-neutral ways, a win for LGBT advocates who say the pink and blue hues of traditional marketing methods pressure children to conform to gender stereotypes.
The new law, signed by Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom, does not outlaw traditional boys and girls sections at department stores. Instead, it says large stores must also have a gender neutral section to display “a reasonable selection” of items “regardless of whether they have been traditionally marketed for either girls or for boys.”
That does not include clothes. The law only applies to toys and “childcare items,” which include hygiene and teething products. And it only applies to stores with at least 500 employees, meaning small businesses are exempt.
While California is the first state to require this, some large department stores have already changed how they display their products. Target Corp., with 1,915 stores across the United States, announced in 2015 it would stop using some gender-based signs in its stores.
The law was opposed by some Republicans and some conservative groups, who argued the government should not tell parents how to shop for their children.

I see two problems with “a reasonable selection”. One when have these people ever been reasonable and two doesn’t a store making a selection for these people require some sort of biased thinking?

I don’t think I agree. Read how carefully tailored and half-hearted this law is. “Doesn’t include this,” “only stores with 500+ employees,” “reasonable size.”
This isn’t a serious law, and I doubt it’s ever really enforced anywhere. This is something some state legislators used to pander to advocacy groups and get that coveted-in-urban-California A-rating from them. It’s almost like a hostage situation at this point, every year California Democrats must pass some new “LGBT rights” bill, and it’s clear they’re running out of ideas that wouldn’t immediately be struck down by the courts.
That’s an interesting theory. Others have postulated we’ve hit “peak woke” and your thought fits into that theory.
It would be nice if you are right about this. I thought the go-all-the-way version of the bill was going to pass, so I’m surprised to see it watered down so much.

When I was 8 years old or so, we would sneak peeks at the lingerie section of the catalog.
Now it’s a section of the store? I was born too early.

It actually goes the other direction when products are determined one gender or the other. If a boy child decides to be a girl and wants to play with a doll rather than a football, which is what they are aiming this at, then doesn’t that destroy the perception of gender separation they are trying to achieve? If a store is forced to decide on products to aim them at certain gender based theologies by providing the same differences they had before not by gender, but by creating just the appearance of it, dose that actually clear up the problem or confuse it more by adding to it?
