US Jewish Leaders ‘Dismayed’ by Sen. Rand Paul’s Continued Blocking of Iron Dome Bill

Leaders of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations called on US Senator Rand Paul to end his opposition to a measure funding Israel’s missile defense system, as the Kentucky Republican remained the main obstacle to the bill’s swift passage.

“We are dismayed by a third delay in as many weeks of a vote in the US Senate by Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) to provide $1 billion to replenish Israel’s Iron Dome missile defense system,” said Conference Chair Dianne Lob, CEO William Daroff and Vice Chair Malcolm Hoenlein on Friday.

“This critical legislation passed the US House by a nearly unanimous vote weeks ago, and has the strong support of senators from both sides of the aisle,” they continued. “With a 90% interception rate, the life-saving Iron Dome technology is a key line of defense for the people of Israel – Jews, Christians, and Muslims alike – and to jeopardize its integrity risks the safety and security of both Israelis and Palestinians.”

After a lopsided passage in the House over the objections of a handful of progressive Democrats and one Republican, the standalone bill awaits passage in the Senate, where Paul has stood in the way of a fast-track process that needs unanimous backing. The Kentucky Senator has said he favors paying for the air defense system with aid already appropriated for Afghanistan.

Amazing that he can be so right about so many things, and so very wrong about this.

I like Rand Paul but as a Christian and as a supporter of Israel I strongly disagree with his stand on this one. Unless I’m missing something here...

In other words, you think it is OK to send lots of US money to Afghanistan.

He wants it paid for out of the Afghan aid which is now obsolete but has not been cancelled

Unless they’re going to give the billions to the Taliban ?

Ok, now that you mention it, I do recall that. It’s probably in the article I should have read thoroughly.

Actually Tigers, there is $6 billion for Afghanistan (Taliban now...)

Rand wants $5 billion returned to the Treasury and $1 billion appropriated for the Iron Dome.

I believe that is what he is asking for..

That’s OK.

The article doesn’t make his position clear. It’s a little one sided.

Rand is trying to do some housekeeping on behalf of the taxpayer. He’s not against it just wants it paid for.

That’s fine, I figured the money wasn’t going to Afghanistan. (but you never know) The point is that the money has been appropriated and Rand is fine with giving a billion of that to Israel instead of appropriating yet another billion.

I think you are. Rand Paul is not against funding the Iron Dome. He just wants to fund it without driving the country even deeper into debt. From the article:

“The Kentucky Senator has said he favors paying for the air defense system with aid already appropriated for Afghanistan.”

I am a huge supporter of Israel. They are one of our few true friends. But I’d go even further than Paul. We are a debtor nation. Israel should pay for its own defenses. (And yeah, I know we spend money on worse things.)

Yes. He wants it paid for out of the existing budget rather than added to the debt.

Prudent and principled as ever.

Should be zero dollars to any foreign country but since thats never going to happen I hope Rand’s plan to stop the money for Afghanistan works so it can be rerouted to Israel

We send too much money to other countries as “aid”. I like Israel and have family there but I think the Israeli economy can support this expense.

How about we stop sending money to the palestinians. Violence for them is how they get other Arab and European countries to give them money, which is then stolen by their leaders.

I understand and support his efforts, as long as the funds aren’t delayed to a point Israel is caused irreparable harm.

Off topic on a side note, have you seen Covidland yet. It was released yesterday. If not I have a link.

Yes it’s a huge waste but getting them to cut $1 billion is a huge step.

Rand is taking a stand. I’m sure he doesn’t need the hassle and the bad press but there you go.
