California first to let kids add parents to insurance plans

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- California is the first state to let some adult children add their parents as dependents on their insurance plans, a move advocates hope will cover the small population of people living in the country illegally who don't qualify for other assistance programs.

The trend nationally has been to let children linger on their parents' health insurance plans. Former President Barack Obama's health care law let children stay on their parents' plans until age 26. Some states have gone further and let kids stay on their parents' plans until at least age 30, including Florida, Illinois, Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

...To be eligible, adults must rely on their child for at least 50% of their total support. The law applies only to people who buy their health insurance on the individual market. Those who get insurance through their jobs, which includes most people in the state, aren't eligible.

That makes the law much cheaper. A previous version, which would have applied to more people, could have increased employer premiums between $200 million and $800 million per year, depending on how many people enrolled. That prompted business groups, including the California Chamber of Commerce, to oppose the bill — winning key concessions.

This narrower version of the law ensures far fewer people can enroll. The California Department of Insurance estimates just 15,000 adults will use this law, prompting an annual increase of between $12 million and $48 million per year for individual premiums....

I don’t understand why anyone, who is a legal U.S. citizen, still lives in Ca.

I never heard of this law before now, and I'm just a simple caveman, but I do know one thing: if a government agency of a Democrat State projects that X people will take advantage of free stuff, then the real number will be at least 10X.

It is beautiful. And if you make millions, taxes really don't matter.

But not for me

The weather. That's pretty much the only reason why I would ever return to California, but it is a huge draw for me.

OTOH, between the wildfires, poor air quality in the populated areas, poor water management and subsequent mediocre drinking water, the state isn't what it used to be.

(Newsom went on a law-signing spree as soon as the recall election was over - last count 23 new ones - all by ruler edict, no legislature )

IF there are 15,000, then the employer premium cost will be $800-$3200 - depending on health if parent? China pushes elder care off to the children so their govt has no burden for elder care. I wonder if this is a forced step in that direction?

I can’t speak for the ‘logic’, but tell a company that the price of a benefit (like health care) will increase by $1,000 per year and they will go ballistic. But tell them that they need to pay $50,000 more to keep their people from moving to Austin and they’ll say “well, that’s the market”.

They’ll let illegals stay on their parent’s policy after they’re dead plus they can vote for their dead parents. 🤪

My son is in Silicon valley. My health care insurance premium went up 600 bucks a month with Bammy care.

I now know what I’m asking for Christmas!

Anchor babies (who are not real US citizens) will bring their deadbeat illegal alien parents onto the insurance welfare rolls. That’s what this is.

“Austin” has become a very expensive place.

Nashville, Tennessee and Greenville, South Carolina have also gotten quite expensive.

I lived there I know it’s beautiful. When I lived there it was not nearly as messed up as it is now, but I could see the handwriting on the wall.
