Here too. His guide has unique variants/hybrids that can't be found in any other guide(to my knowledge)
My son an I went to a Sibley lecture and book signing at Duke U. when his Guide first came out.
Thinking of having a book burning now.
Great picture of a Painted Bunting!
I start wondering if “people” like that were actually created in a lab by an evil scientist.
Re: 31 - It is interesting to see birds do what we might call “play”. Tree Swallows for example will pick feathers out of midair and then fly for a bit before they drop the feather and another Tree Swallow picks the feather out of midair.
I believe this behavior is mainly by males. There’s some theories on why it occurs - one is that it helps establish a “pecking order” in a certain area.
This behavior (based on my research) only occurs prior to hatching of eggs. Once eggs hatch, Tree Swallows will ignore feathers shot into the air, and rarely add additional feathers to their nest substrate. From hatching on its nestling feeding, nest cleaning, etc. that take up the adults time.
Certifiable.
Y'all buncha racis'.
Re: 33 - I can count on one hand passing along to a photographer or birdwatcher a vagrant, or endangered bird species seen in the area.
Four years ago, there was a Swallow-tailed Kite vagrant in the area that was “patrolling” for prey. Never passed it along as 1) a large crowd will form as they are so rare in this area and 2) those crowds would disrupt my research. It was pretty interesting to watch the bird fly over to and go after prey such as snakes.
I learned later that people ended up trespassing on other people’s property to get a glimpse of this bird. Not all birders are like that, but enough are that they disregard private property rights and make it difficult for the birding community as a whole.
If someone can help me in my research (scribing field notes, helping to control non-native plant species, etc.) I always accept help. With over 2,000 data points recorded in field notes each season, people need to be focused on quality data collection. Any other talk in the research area other than that specifically related to the research degrades data quality.
I guess my father/daughter trip to see if we can find an Ivorybill this weekend is off! My daughters will be disappointed!!🤓
At least since 2014, activists have alleged that birdwatchers and birdwatching are racist. Bird names are white supremacist and imperialist. Birding's Woke elite are now changing the official names of every bird named after a white, male naturalist. The Montezuma quail will keep its name. Montezuma reigned over a slave-owning, war-based empire that practiced religiously-mandated cannibalism and the torture and murder of children sacrificed to Tlaloc, the Aztec rain god. No matter, Montezuma, who wore regalia comprised of the feathers of hundreds of dead birds, was superior to groundbreaking white naturalist John James Audubon... The National Audubon Society ran an article in 2018 entitled, "For the LGBTQ Community, Birding Can Be … a Source of Anxiety." The article reports that "Nature reserves and wildlife refuges tend to … lack diversity … the birding community … is definitely dominated by white men … Birding trips with straight men have been very difficult … Straight spaces often feel hyper-competitive and masculinized … which can suck the fun out of birding … queer people [feel] left out of the team."
Excerpt.... (and read Last paragraph of article also.)
Woke is motivated by hate. Woke doesn't work for; Woke works against. Rather than helping black people, BLM burned down cities and bullied white diners into giving closed-fist salutes. Instead of advancing education for black students, CRT denigrates whites and demands that whites be dispossessed, not just of money, goods, and advanced placement classes, but of cultural capital.
“Too many white cis/het (and male) people are so used to not having to think about anyone but themselves.”
I read the first and second paragraph and when I got to the above line, my first thought was “And the folks who accuse others of thinking only of themselves, aren’t they also only thinking of themselves?”
I also, thought: “Life isn’t fair. Life is unjust. Unless someone is directly talking to or at you, ignore them and their insensitivity, live your life and try to get along. What I accept and approve of is my business and your disapproving of it is your business as I’m not interested in debating who is correct, wrong or just plain evil. No. Let’s get along and live free as someday we all die.
Just Me Thinking, how messed up the world is... Too much anger. Too much “Me-me-me-Think about me” and not enough “Let Me Be and I will let you be.”
Feels good to vent.
Asking for a friend: Is watching the Blue Jàys, Orioles or the Cardinals racist? 🤓
If this article demonstrates clearly that America has morphed into a society that desperately needs to be wiped off the face of the Earth as soon as possible.
Big Bird watching is Racist? I guess Sesame Street will kill off Big Bird...
“The outdoors is for *everyone* and has felt unsafe to many LGBTQIA2S+ folks for too long...”
WTF is AS2+?
Somebody sic the Central Park birdwatcher and the Central Park anti-birdwatcher dog-walking Karen on this guy.
Sibley’s “Birding Basics” is a phenomenal introduction to the art and science of birding.
That he has gone down this path is tragic and potentially self-destructive.
Only a pervert would know.
