Maybe they lost a sub in the collision.

It’s laughable for China to express concern that the sub may have “damaged the marine environment”. LOL

Just got through reading U.S.S. Seawolf. Pretty good book. Larry Bond, IMHO, is the best writer for anything Submarines.

Books by Larry Bond include, Artic Gambit, Vortex, Fatal Thunder, Shattered Trident, Cauldron, Cold Choices - I’ve read all Larry’s books dealing with Subs and Sub warfare.

Bond is the best.

Maybe a partially sunken shipping container. Thousands are lost at sea every year.

I would assume the submarine would have been at a depth of several hundred feet. Way too deep for a shipping container.

Ever read Run Silent, Run Deep by Edwin Beach? He was a sub commander during World War II, and one helluva writer. (Horrible movie, Beach hated it.) Beach was the naval advisor to President Eisenhower, but he got bored being a desk jockey. If you haven't read it, you must read The Bravest Man: Richard O'Kane and the Amazing Submarine Adventures of the USS Tang by William Tuohy.

“injuring 11 sailors on board”

I would say it wasn’t a small object they hit. Playing chicken with a Chinese Sub? Chinese Sub trying to shoo them away? Lot’s of things come to mind.

The South China Sea is shallow and not an ideal submarine operating area. They were obviously there to sniff around at the Chinese Navy, and the Chinese may have deliberately interferred with their mission. It happens.

Anybody check at the port where Chinese subs return to base for dented fenders?

The US Navy said it the object was not a land mass nor a sub of any nation. There is only one other class of object possible : USO

Depends on where they were at. Much of the South China Sea is thousands of feet deep. Other areas, like the Taiwan Straight, are only a few hundred feet deep.

They were obviously there to sniff around at the Chinese Navy, and the Chinese may have deliberately interferred with their mission. It happens.

Perhaps. But if they were close inshore that makes a collision with an uncharted seamount an even more likely explanation.

Not necessarily. It is possible for a shipping container to naturally achieve neutral or near neutral buoyancy and sink slowly.
