oops... so that is what happened to the kraaken...
Navy careening off tankers again?
“In other news, Australian officials appear to now be able to track a Chinese submarine in the South China Sea from Perth after one of it’s propeller blades broke off”…
no one uses active sonar except in peacetime search and rescue.
you might as well yell “ hey! I’m over here!
They don’t have sonar to “see” obstacles?????
Incompetence in the navigation room is the only explanation, unless it was something with a pipe frame that wouldn’t be big enough to get a sonar blip. With above the waterline radar, anything bigger than a 55 gallon barrel will show up on radar. I think a half dozen geese will show up...from standing watch behind the plotter board, I know anything bigger than a 14 foot jon boat will show up. I had to plot them. If I remember correctly anything but the marker bouys would give us a blip.
Damn. Ran into one of those Chinese stop signs. Need to replace that Obama era boat driver.
“I wonder if the Chinese subs do a Crazy Li maneuver?”
Yes, they always turn left. lol
If said war were during a Democrat Regime, they could put rrstraints on the media that the GOP would not be permitted to do.
Ping
In the old days 60’s/70’s and earlier, we squids figured anything biggern a shitcan was a target. Tincan sailors got a little hot when we mentioned it.
Or a woman
Godzilla!!!
I was going to post that in other news China say one of their subs was missing. Important lesson, don’t build submarines out of Chinese steel.
Subs don’t typically use active sonar (pinging). They usually listen passively so as not to give themselves away. Trouble is that modern nuke boats are quieter than their surroundings in many situations. Chinese SSN’s are not particularly quiet.
Plus, this is a Seawolf boat. Their mission is usually more strategic intel. While they certainly could prosecute a close-tail they would probably be tasked to more specialized missions.
Operationally, subs rarely use sonar in their quiet mode. Instead they use passive listening.
Could have just been a horny whale.
I remember years ago when a US sub ran into an uncharted underwater mountain.
This sounds like a job for ATRAGON, the sub-battleship-flying bomber which I saw decades ago!

“What about the sonar?”
Sonar on the boats is passive, i.e., no outgoing pings. If the boat you are in is making more noise than the target then the target will not be heard.
Boats do all they can to remain silent.
I know exactly what happened here. The sun ran into a bunch of white supremacist dolphins singing “f—k Joe Biden.”
