A US nuclear powered submarine struck an object underwater in the South China Sea on Saturday, according to two defense officials.
A number of sailors on board the USS Connecticut were injured in the accident, the officials said. None of the injuries were life-threatening, according to a statement from US Pacific Fleet. It's unclear what the Seawolf-class submarine may have hit while it was submerged.
"The submarine remains in a safe and stable condition. USS Connecticut's nuclear propulsion plant and spaces were not affected and remain fully operational," the statement said. "The incident will be investigated." The US Navy did not specify the incident took place in the South China Sea, only that it occurred in international waters in the Indo-Pacific region.
The accident happened as tensions between the US and China soared over the Chinese military's incursions into Taiwan's Air Defense Integration Zone (ADIZ).

Freaking Seawolf class too. One of the best and certainly the most expensive.
BUMPEX 2021
More Obama military coxswainship.
Probably busy trying to figure out how they can get an all lgbtqrstlmnop crew, not worried about naviagtion.
One less Chinese sub
Ooops!
these things are rarely reported, but happen when playing cat and mouse at 1000 meters
It’s the ‘New Navy”
You would have thought they would have detected a Chinese sub before they hit it.
I wonder if the Chinese subs do a Crazy Li maneuver?
There are a lot of uncharted obstacles in the South China Sea from islands to sunken WWII wrecks.
I’ve had that pleasure in the Gibraltar strait years ago. A crazy Ivan, by a Russian Fast Attack doing his thing. It’ll wake you up on your first patrol.
For example:
On 11 February 1992, the American attack submarine USS Baton Rouge collided with the Russian Navy nuclear submarine B-276 Kostroma off Severomorsk. The mission of Baton Rouge was reportedly the recovery or delivery of intelligence-monitoring devices on the seabed.
Okay, as usual, what isn’t being reported? It must have been quite an impact if a number of crew were injured. Did the Chinese drop a wake up call near the sub for instance? Much more info needed, although we are not entitled to it.
There is no reason for the news to be reporting this.
I can only imagine how many American lives would be endangered/lost if we ever go to war with China. All in the name of “news.”
Yes, I would reserve judgement. Granted, the USN has brought on this kind of scrutiny due to their poor state of training and equipment readiness, but I would want more info.
I know 2 guys that where on Queenfish for her BUMPEX, one never rode a boat again and was dubbed “Wimpy”
I don’t think there ever was a media report about that, they reconstructed the mast with cardboard painted black and limped into a port at like 3:30 AM
Kamikaze Chinese sub ?
