HARRISBURG, Pa. —

Schools across Pennsylvania are still dealing with the low rate of vaccinations for young children, which has increased the need for masks in the classroom.

According to Gov. Tom Wolf, getting vaccine shots into the arms of school-aged children remains a roadblock in lifting the mask mandate in schools across Pennsylvania.

"I think the key is not so much the date as when the vaccine becomes available to all school children and how fast we can get them vaccinated," Wolf said.

The governor's mask mandate went into effect in early September. However, Wolf said he initially planned to revisit the mask mandate in early October, but hasn't been able to lift the order because of the inability to vaccinate younger children.

Many school districts are seeing the need for masks amid rising COVID-19 cases. Eastern Lancaster School's superintendent, Bob Hollister, says he understands the importance of masking, but hopes the mask order can be lifted when it's the right time.

"I do think there is an end in sight and not too soon. we're all very tired and exhausted from all of this, and it doesn't matter what industry you're in we're all tired of it," Hollister said.

We don't live in Pennsylvania, but this is what I wrote our school today when they inquired about your young son's vaccination status: "Our son is not vaccinated and at the present time we have no plans for him to be vaccinated. This is under one or more criteria, in no particular order: (1) religious, (2) medically unnecessary (youth under 18 have near zero risk), (3) contrary to CDC and WHO guidelines (which recommend it only for kids with pre-conditions, which our son does not have), and (4) the “approved” vaccine is approved for adults only and is actually, even then, not available."
