Bay Area health officials are considering dropping indoor mask mandates. On Tuesday, Mayor London Breed said the change is long overdue. But, there's still a lot of hesitation among Bay Area residents, epidemiologists included.
Mask mandates have been a moving target throughout the pandemic. In mid-June, when California reopened, the state dropped indoor mask mandates. But when Delta created a new surge, seven Bay Area counties re-issued indoor masking mandates in early August. Now Bay Area health officials are discussing ditching the face coverings once again.
"The mask just feels like a safety blanket," said San Francisco resident, Danielle Coller.
Coller says she's just not ready to drop her mask. "It just feels too soon! Too many different variants. I'm fully vaccinated, but I still feel nervous."
"We're past the metrics defined by the CDC for lifting indoor mask mandates," said UCSF infectious disease specialist, Dr. Monica Gandhi.
Dr. Gandhi says right now, it makes sense to drop the mandate. "It becomes a personal choice as opposed to a mandate and when you put in mandates in the setting of the concept of public health, you have to be in a public health emergency and we have low transmission now, with have high vaccination, and that loses it's definition of mandate versus recommendation."
But Dr. Gandhi's UCSF colleague, Dr. George Rutherford, says he won't be dropping his mask anytime soon.
Kate Larsen: "Do you think it's safe?"
Dr. George Rutherford: "I can think of safer things to do."

The last time I walked the poop filled streets of SF I wished I had a mask handy.
Bureaucrats are cowards first last and always.
If you think it is too soon, keep wearing your mask. We are not asking you to stop, we just don’t want you telling us we have to wear a mask.
I bet you still would’ve smelled the urine and poop anyway.

Even in the Free Sector of California where I live, many people still wear the mask. It has become nothing more than a dirty, a nasty, an unhealthy bad habit ... and bad habits are hard to break. It takes strength, commitment and even courage to do so and there’s little evidence of those traits among a large proportion of California “men” and women.
