A Colorado-based health system says it is denying organ transplants to patients not vaccinated against the coronavirus in “almost all situations,” citing studies that show these patients are much more likely to die if they get covid-19.
The policy illustrates the growing costs of being unvaccinated and wades into deeply controversial territory — the use of immunization status to decide who gets limited medical care. The mere idea of prioritizing the vaccinated for rationed health resources has drawn intense backlash, as overwhelmingly unvaccinated covid-19 patients push some hospitals to adopt “crisis standards of care,” in which health systems can prioritize patients for scarce resources based largely on their likelihood of survival.
UCHealth’s rules for transplants entered the spotlight Tuesday when Colorado state Rep. Tim Geitner (R) said it denied a kidney transplant to a Colorado Springs woman because she was not vaccinated against the coronavirus. Calling the decision “disgusting” and discriminatory, Geitner shared a letter that he said the patient received last week from UCHealth’s transplant center at the University of Colorado’s Anschutz Medical Campus in the city of Aurora.
The letter said the woman would be “inactivated” on a kidney transplant waiting list and had 30 days to start coronavirus vaccination. If she refused to be vaccinated, it said, she would be removed.
UCHealth declined to discuss particular patients because of federal privacy laws, and The Washington Post could not independently verify the woman’s story. But the health system confirmed Tuesday that nearly all of its transplant recipients and organ donors must get vaccinated against the coronavirus, in addition to other vaccinations and health requirements. A spokesman, Dan Weaver, said that other transplant centers in the United States have similar policies or are transitioning to them.

If we were the left, we’d protest and riot that hospital into compliance.
Blacks are less likely to be vaccinated therefore........
UCHealth should close and be disbanded, then.
I don’t buy it. This is 100% political. It’s part of the left’s push to punish anyone who dares defy them and not be vaxxed.
An organ transplant has nothing to do with covid. Or the vax. Immunosuppressants are given during transplants. THAT makes the person more susceptible to the virus.
Males engaging in sodomy has been proven to shorten their lives much more than any voluntary action, including smoking.
Will they refuse transplants to gays?

This is one of the few situations where, IMHO, vaccination requirements make a semblance of sense. Once an organ transplant recipient actually receives an organ, from what I understand they go on meds to SUPPRESS THEIR IMMUNE SYSTEM so the donated organ is not rejected. That makes them subsequently very susceptible to infections. What otherwise would be a minor infection can easily kill them.
There are many people on WAITING lists to receive an organ transplant. It makes sense to give an organ to a person most likely to successfully receive the transplant and live.
What happened to pre-existing conditions???
Are those out the window now?
This is complete Buffoonery...
Clearly the point of this “pandemic” is conditioning.
My husband has cancer. He had his yearly physical with his doctor, a great friend of his and he was asked about vaccine status and whether or not he would get it. My husband refused and told me the atmosphere immediately changed, that his friend wasn’t so friendly after that. My husband is very disappointed in his friend.
I just don’t understand why you people who were stupid enough to take a experimental vax want everyone else to demonstrate the same stupidity. Perhaps you get some kind of reassurance that you are not stupid if everyone else does it. But that seems too stupid to be true.
I would like to add to this that my husband’s cancer is a recurrence and he is undergoing treatment.
He was given the option of NOT having another treatment AND IT WAS HIS CHOICE IF HE CHOSE TO ‘BE MADE COMFORTABLE’ INSTEAD AND DIE WITH DIGNITY.
Why aren’t people who don’t want to get vaccinated being given the same courtesy?
Is medicine not a “public accommodation”?
This is discrimination! Bake the Cake!
I agree 100% with everything in your comment, and I'm one of those people who is 100% opposed to a jab requirement for the overwhelming majority of the population where the jab is iffy on a risk/reward basis.
If that were the case, they'd prioritize those on the list who have natural immunity and never took any of COVID experimental treatments.
Sue, sue and then find someone to help you sue again. Make it front page and see what happens. None of those entities like being in the news.
Are they refusing unvaccinated organ donors?

Yes and that’s likely why they didn’t make being vaccinated an absolute requirement but said it was in “almost all situations” BUT NOT ALL. Clearly they are being rational and are looking at the candidate’s actual IMMUNITY situation (for which being vaccinated is an imperfect indicator). Natural immunity would clearly MORE than suffice.
I haven't received the vaccination, and never will unless they get a lot more aggressive in their coercion. I won't refuse the shot at the point of a gun.
But I agree with the logic of making the vaccination a requirement in this case. Leave it up to each person to make up their own mind if they're the only ones affected by their decision. In this case though, another person IS affected... the next alternative for who would receive the donated organ.
Prayers up for both of you! Hang in there.
