It Looks Like America's Energy Future Is Still Going to Be a Gas
realclearinvestigations.com ^ | 9/29/2021 | Vince Bielski

The battle over President Joe Biden’s sweeping clean energy plan isn’t over, but there already appears to be a winner – natural gas.

The fossil fuel will likely remain a mainstay of America’s electrical grid for some time, according to energy experts and lawmakers. That’s a big disappointment to liberal Democrats and environmentalists. In protests in cities and campuses nationwide, one of them fronted by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, they made natural gas the new climate villain, replacing coal, the dirtier fossil fuel that’s fading in the states.

Climate activists had pinned their hopes on the administration’s proposal to remake the energy industry at breakneck speed. It gives financial incentives to utilities to ramp up the deployment of clean energy sources such as wind and solar and would slow if not stop the expansion of gas-fired power plants.

As Manchin tells it, hitting the brakes on natural gas is a risk he’s not willing to take. Although such a move would reduce carbon emissions – a goal the senator shares – it makes the nation’s aging and feeble grid more vulnerable to dangerous blackouts as wind and solar energy play a larger role. They don’t supply power when the wind stops blowing and the sun is down. So natural gas plants, which have contributed to the closing of hundreds of coal burners, need to anchor the grid until viable clean substitutes come of age.

Most people have gas furnaces in their homes. If they kill off natural gas then millions of people will have to trash perfectly good HVAC systems and go all electric.

Given we have not built a nuclear power plant in decades, and FedGov wants all vehicles to go electric, where in the world will we get all the electricity from? How will we rewire entire neighborhoods around the country to carry much larger electrical loads? Has anyone in the government even asked these questions?

follow @subschiender on Twitter, the "GreenNuclearDeal" guy. The dirty secret is the Gas Lobby wants wind and solar because it's their backup.

Gas can get up to 60% thermal efficiencies with Compound Cycle Units. The other 40% could be used to heat and cool large buildings, malls, business with the heat normally expelled to get the "Delta-T" to drive the cycle all over gain, rather than cooling towers or a river.

That takes some real planning and dare I say put the power-plant near where people are, aka the cities.

That would be a good bridge to Gen 3 and 4 large, small, and micro Nuclear Power Plants.

As Manchin tells it...

Exactly that - a story for the press to cite his grandstanding - in the end he will vote for the package and all its contents, including getting rid of ‘fossil’ fuels, just at lower funding. It is the programs within that are important to the Dems - the amounts are just wish lists and can be restored at a later date.

When I was a kid, we had a coal furnace in the basement. It later got fitted to oil and eventually was replaced by natural gas.

Get ready to pay higher utility bills and enjoy more brown and blackouts.

Invest in nat gas to help you pay those bills.

Guessing, at the very least, the Texas grid will need a little upgrading. :-} Why yes Virginia, these people really are THAT stoopid.

Same here. Nothing like coal btu’s. The best. The smell outside the house and the smoot was terrible though. We could not go outside and play in the snow because it was covered in brown soot.

I live in coal country. There are plenty of old mine company houses now owned privately that still use coal furnaces. Many if not most don’t have septic systems either-the sewage goes right into the creek behind the houses.

I get small royalty checks every month from two gas leases.

The amounts have tripled in the last few months.

I’m also in nat gas stocks and they are doing well. Obama helped me in the same fashion, luckily these idiots never learn any lessons from the real world.

A lot of us cave dwellers still burn fuel oil which is also subject to price shocks and envirowackos trying to make us freeze in the dark, too.
