That is what I was thinking. Their heads were spinning so fast in trying to sort out issues like honor and integrity, that they just could not cope with the confusion.

In 1976 I stationed at McClellan AFB working in the Tech Control Facility. One night our shift supervisor called in wanting to be connected to the First Sergeant. Our Shift Supervisor was off duty that night, but as the senior ranking guy in the barracks, he was also the barracks monitor. We patched him through, but like good little telephone troubleshooters we put the call on the monitor speaker. Sgt. Bowles was the ultimate professional when he reported that they there is a
suspected fatality in the barracks.
We had to have a Top Secret security clearance to work in the Tech Control. One of the Airman, months before I got to the facility, had robbed a convenience store. His clearance was suspended and he was in limbo while his case was being prosecuted off base. The Airman who I never met (I lived with my wife off base), was in limbo and had to pull details every day, cleaning and picking up trash, etc. It got to be too much for him and he was found hanging in his room.
The rest of our 12 hour mid-shift was filled with death humor, with suggestions of him flying home sitting up in an airline seat, etc.
With such turmoil they have been through, it could have been anything.

I was suicidal when I got out. My step dad called the recruiter to see if anyone in my area was home on leave so I could hang out with him

I don’t think so. The men who survived the most dangerous missions and got shot many times never quit. I think they are being silenced. How long were you in service that you come up to that kind of conclusion?I suspect it was knowing some of the people they left behind have been murdered.
