Phoenix – Former Congressman and Republican gubernatorial candidate Matt Salmon today issued the following statement about President Donald J. Trump’s endorsement in the Arizona gubernatorial race:
“I have a great deal of respect for President Trump and the hard work he’s done for our country, but I disagree with his decision today.
“The clear fact remains that Kari Lake isn’t a conservative or even a Republican, and she certainly isn’t the MAGA candidate in this race. She is a former registered Democrat who donated to Barack Obama and John Kerry, who refused to support Republicans, and who gushed over Dr. Fauci as he destroyed the president’s booming economy through perpetual lockdown, the severity of which she mocked. While conservatives worked to secure our borders, Lake supported weak, open-border liberals like Joe Biden. While conservatives called for stronger election integrity, Lake promoted the insecure practice of voting-by-phone because, at the end of the day, she simply does not get it.
“We’ve seen time and again that Lake can’t be trusted and isn’t being honest about who she is or what she’s done.
“She is a lifelong member of the liberal media who knows how to put on a show, and she will parrot whatever convenient political slogan is on the teleprompter in front of her to get ahead. She has smeared President Trump as ‘vulgar’ and ‘offensive’ and admitted in late 2016 that she was ‘not supporting’ him. There is no doubt in my mind that Lake would betray President Trump and Republicans writ large the moment things get tough, just like she has done so many times in the past.
“Over the course of this campaign, Lake will be revealed for exactly what she is: a fraud.
“I have a proven record of fighting for the Constitution, for conservative principles, and for the values that make America great, and I look forward to being elected as Arizona’s next governor and working with President Trump to continue putting our country first.”
Salmon was as I recall a somewhat conservative congressman, but was never reliable.
Lake has at least SAID the right things about the audit and everything else.
I have known Matt and his wife Nancy personally for decades. He is honest. He is one of the few (now former) US Congressmen who kept their term limits promise from the time he was originally elected. When in Congress, he refused to personally benefit financially from insider information; something that most Congress criters cannot honestly say.
After the 3 terms he promised, he stepped down. He is politically quite conservative... His political “sin” was that back in the time when Mitt Romney was a candidate for President, Salmon helped Romney fund raise. A big mistake when he has since come to regret completely when Romney’s true colors became apparent.
It’s true. Matt lost the Gov. race that year by the slimmest of margins. Main reasons: the Dems put Indian Reservation Gambling on the ballot that year which drew out a ton of never-before-voted people who voted for Gaming (Salmon was opposed to the Initiative), plus there was a small but very real anti-Mormon vote among a subset of AZ Republicans.
Freedom Caucus has three Arizona Congressmen.
Gosar is backing Lake, Biggs is backing Salmon, and Lesko is backing Yee.

Post 9/11 some wrong decisions were made if this person didn’t like George W. Bush I would say she had more common sense that a lot of us did back then.
We were still letting that guy fool us too many times.
My turning on GWB started up when the Bush Brothers put Terri Schiavo to death through both inaction and pretend action to cool off public opinion.
Trump made the call I’m with Trump.
Lindseed Graham is also backing Salmon.
He is backed by all the establishment rinos in the congress.
I will be voting for you Mr. Salmon.

Sometime democrat, Obama girl, media personality, woman of color. Trump is changing the party with this?! Was she for the war before she was against it? Did she change her mind about it while she was a Kerry democrat, Bush Republican or Obama democrat? I was a GOP stooge for 50 years, worked to elect both Bushes, but at my worst this hack wouldn’t have passed the smell test. Trump is incredibly stupid to continue taking his GOP handlers’ word on endorsements. After this one and the RNC RINO hack he endorsed v Liz Cheney last week its obvious he hasn’t learned a damn thing about DC swamp republicans.
Trump made a whole lot of bad personnel picks.
As to candidates, we get to pick them. And each of us has to do our own due diligence. It sounds like Lake is questionable, to say the least.
Maybe I’m just soured but it appears to me we are voting gop-e out, but still moving left.
Another bad endorsement, it’s not like it’s the only one.
Salmon let Janet Napolitano steal him blind. He is a GOP-e nothing. A Jeff Flake clone.
I hear you but Lake was in bed with the dems both professionally in the media and personally as a democrat for a very long time. People can and do change. I wish there was a way to be sure she is sincere in what she says because she says all the right things.
If you ain’t willing to talk the talk, you sure as hell won’t walk the walk. Kari Lake is MAGA and calls out the GOPe con men at every turn.
AZ is full of phony “lifelong conservatives” who hate their voters. That the AZ GOPe, Chamber of Commerce, Dems and Leftists hate her is all the endorsement I need.
Amen Brother and A-Woman. Kari Lake knows about and is willing to fight the culture war.

For what it’s worth, her co-anchor for many years was a liberal named John Hook.
Wow....I think I need to research all of this but I think Salmon has the best chance of winning.
Michelle Yee is the better choice.
