That reminds me of an old MAD magazine piece from waaaay back.
It was about the Romans becoming softer and fatter and then one day lean and hungry barbarians stormed in and destroyed the Western Empire. The next panel of the piece showed a fat happy American weeble looking thing being charged by a Chinese soldier.

I watched this happen in the U.S. back in the 80s when AIDS became a thing. A straight female, I worked in the arts alongside dozens of gay men. Within months of the news getting around about "the gay plague", about 30% of them switched teams—found girlfriends, stopped swishing, and some even got married to women and had children—reinforcing my understanding that "gayness" is neither a hard-and-fast condition people are born with, nor are all the people practicing gayness too wounded emotionally to respond appropriately to a serious enough threat to their lives.
