Professor warns of a ‘mating’ crisis in US as fewer men go to college

“We have mating inequality in this country,” the marketing professor at New York University’s Stern School of Business told CNN on Saturday.

“Two in three relationships start on Tinder, 50 men, 50 women. Forty-six women show all their attention to just four men and what do those four [men] have? They signal success with a college degree,” he said.

- ADVERTISEMENT - Women make up almost 60 per cent of college students with men being at 40 per cent, and the gap is growing. In the fall of 1970, almost 59 per cent of college students were men, 41 per cent were women.

In 2020, US colleges enrolled 1.5 million fewer students than in 2015 and 71 per cent of those who have chosen to not study on are men. According to the Common Application, women made up 3.8 million college applications in the most recent school year, while men made up 2.8 million.

Mr Galloway noted that men also “drop out at a greater rate”.

“Over the next few years, for every one man that graduates from college, there’s going to be two women,” he said. “So this is becoming overwhelming. College is becoming the domain of women and not men.”

“The most dangerous person in the world is a broke and a lone male and we are producing too many of them,” Mr Galloway added. “The mating inequality that’s going to come out of this dearth of men in college poses an existential risk to our economy and our society.

There are a group of majors that reflect this story’s theme. No one would “mate” with those women anyway.

Given a choice between marrying a woman with a worthless degree and $100K+ in debt, versus a woman with a community college degree (lots of marketable 2 year degrees in bookkeeping, nursing, etc) and no debt, I think a lot of men would pick the latter.

You described my wife and daughter. 2 years of community college and scholarships to finish the four year degree.

My daughter did take out loans for her masters. But those will be paid for within four years of graduation.

My retirement plan is to sell my 8 1/2 acres, the house, everything - all the cars, the barn, literally everything, and buy a somewhere around 35-45 foot twin engine live-aboard boat to ‘retire’ on, working via satellite because I’m in IT and work remote anyway, so why not from the main cabin, or the main deck, or the captain’s wheel? I’ll travel around to where ever I want, and when or IF the kids want to visit, I’ll fly them to whatever is a nearby port, pick them up and we’ll spend some time fishing, relaxing, etc.

Still have income to pay for the slip fees, ISP, gas etc., and work from where ever is great weather!

Sounds awesome! Buddy of mine is doing that soon, sans the retirement, fairly soon out west. I’ll be retiring in my early to mid 40s and plan on traveling the globe for a while maybe 6-7 months a year...not sure after I get bored with that. I may blog about early retirement and my travel excursions

I’m early 50’s (51), so I’m planning/hoping to do the boat/irement in the next 6-8 years... before I’m 60, without a doubt. Just gotta get my last kid graduated and then make sure my dad has no problems for his golden years (he’s 78 and lives with me, but isn’t going to live on a boat with his bad back/knees/etc.).

Nice! I learned about the FIRE movement ~10-11 years ago (was closing in on 30) when my career was really taking off so as I’ve been promoted from Coordinator, to Mgr, to Sr Mgr, to Dir and now VP, we’ve saved nearly all of the increase in income except taxes and went from a negative NW to about $2 mil today...soon as I hit $3.5+, early retirement it is, which I’m estimating in 4 years +-1

The real issue is the uncontrolled SMV of callow young women (who used to be subject to strict societal strictures) - which is further abetted by our current free-for-all culture.

Young women used to be told by their parents "Don't waste the pretty" -- meaning use your years of maximum attractiveness to attract a good man WHO WILL ACTUALLY MARRY them, rather than partying with a succession of "cute" guys who have no interest in marriage, finally arriving at 30 with their looks going, and no husband.

Just for a hook up is different of course than being serious with someone.

“The other problem is somewhat human nature. Women, now equipped with more information and choice overwhelmingly go for the top 10-15% of men. Great for those guys whether it’s because they won the genetic lottery or because they were born to rich parents. In fact in one study I saw, a large group of women and men rated each other. The men rated the women on a standard bell curve. The women however rated 80% of men as “below average”. Obviously that’s statistically impossible, but it shows the skewed thinking of women when assessing mating prospects.

The lucky guys at the top have it made. They get to screw their way through college and their 20s and often casually discard average or only slightly above average women because they can. Meanwhile most guys get very little if any female attention. The smart women figure out before 30 and realize it’s unrealistic for them to expect to land an 8 or a 9 if they themselves are only a 5. So they pick a good guy who rates about where they are but who has some sense and who sets himself up for a successful career.

The foolish/delusional/unrealistic women wait until 30 when every single last day of their youth is gone and only then out of desperation start going for guys they should have gone for 5-10 years earlier. Often guys they specifically rejected earlier! Only now those guys in their early to mid 30s who are climbing up the ladder of success don’t want those women. They’re too old and the guys know those women are just desperate and don’t truly want to be with them anyway. In other words, there is very little prospect of a happy or successful marriage. No, those guys want what those women WERE, not what they ARE. So they too go for the 20-something women.”

I think this phenomenon was once labeled “Poindexter’s Revenge!”

This is worth a listen to explain this phenomenon further:

That's what I was talking about: young men (who are not yet at their prime desirability) hanging out with older women while continuing to look for women their own age or younger.

One of my friends in college was like that. Tall, handsome, smart, good career. I looked him up some years ago, in his 50's. He had never married. Went through a ton of women, though. That's the thing about being in the top 5%: he had so many options that it was just much easier to go "Next!" and move on, than to deal with relationship bumps and potholes.

More to the point, these women want his financial security, not the man. As such, they are MUCH more likely to have a kid or two, divorce him, and walk away with the assets he's spent his life accumulating. No thanks.

I liked the “Poindexter’s Revenge!” video

I especially liked the part where he says to all the women who rejected him in high school, but now want him, because now he’s making a 7-figure income: “I’m not interested in YOU any more! I’m banging your DAUGHTERS”
