My view of fascism is that it was nationalist socialism, whereas communism was internationalist socialism. But even in Soviet Russia, there was a kind of messianic view of Russia. The philosopher Berdyaev talked about it. Putin may have - sincerely or not - tried to tap into that old idea of Mother Russia.
The Comintern, the Communist International, was established in Moscow in 1919, two years after the Bolsheviks seized power.
The Soviet Union was all about spreading Communism worldwide. Nguyen Sinh Cung attended Comintern training in 1923; we called him Ho Chi Minh.
