It did not seem like the legislature would have gone to all this trouble if they did not have some evidence of massive fraud.

This has always been the fatal flaw with these audits. For instance, it may be possible to find irregularities but you can never show who a ghost voter voted for.
You may think it's obvious that any questionable votes must have gone for Biden but don't expect everyone else to assume that.
That might be correct but that's a misleading statement.
The audit will likely document a very specific number of ballots that were either illegal or whose authenticity could not be verified (and therefore should have been excluded).
What the audit CANNOT do is verify which candidate got how many votes from the illegal ballots. The whole point of a secret ballot process is to make it impossible to connect the identity of individual voters with the vote that was cast on an actual ballot. That's why the verification process for mail-in ballots is supposed to have all the voter ID information on an external envelope or sleeve that is immediately separated from the ballot before the ballot is tabulated.
