U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley announced in the wee hours of Friday that he intends to seek an eighth term in 2022.

The 88-year-old Iowa Republican, who has been in the Senate since 1981, posted his plans on Twitter shortly after 4 a.m. CT, along with a video of him going out for his daily jog.

"It’s 4 a.m. in Iowa so I’m running," Grassley wrote. "I do that 6 days a week. Before I start the day I want you to know what Barbara and I have decided.

"I’m running for re-election—a lot more to do, for Iowa. We ask and will work for your support. Will you join us?"

This is the kind of unforced error that we can’t afford. It’s one thing for an old warhorse to run one more time in a tough year, when he may be the best bet to retain the seat. But 2022 is shaping up to be a strong Republican year. NOW is the time for the old guys to gracefully retire and let a younger person succeed to what should be a Republican stronghold seat.

A primary challenge will only work if Deep State isn’t allowed to pick the challenger, and if voting is honest.

Those are two honking big ifs.

Zombies.

Exactly. Congressional staff do all the work and lobbyists write the checks/laws. No way I would vote for Grassley if I lived in Iowa.

Grassley is pure garbage. A life not worth living. His existence on Earth is a net negative. I hope it dies a painful, slow death, knowing it never did anything worthwhile in its miserable existence.

If a person believes the country requires him in the Senate at the age of 90, there is something seriously wrong with that person, and not just age.

“To be replaced in mid-term by a Democrat. :(”

Why? Current Gov is a Republican and appoints replacement to serve until next scheduled election. Why would a Republican Gov appoint a Democrat replacement?

A prime example of part of what’s wrong in Washington, not knowing when to get off the government gravy train. Our form of government was not designed for lifelong partisan politicians, it corrupts the whole process IMHO. Grassley is no different than a Dimocrat when it comes to becoming corrupt. Some just conceal it better than others.

When to get off? When you become corrupt, for sure. But that is not age dependent. Is Grassley corrupt?

A constitutional amendment retiring anyone in federal office at their 80th birthday and preventing anyone 80 years or older from being elected or appointed to a federal office is needed. That includes congressional, judicial and the executive branch.

I would support it. Appointees and employees could probably be done by statute.

“One never knows the future.”

No kidding?

Do you think it makes a difference whether the Gov in Iowa is a Republican? If she was a Dem there would be ZERO question that she would appoint a Dem should Grassley quit or die.

I’ve noticed Grassley’s decline for a while. He can barely read what his staffers write for him at hearings now.
