Central Pa. school district rescinds diverse book ban after parents rally against it

After widespread criticism that drew national attention, Central York School District on Monday night reversed its decision to “ban” a list of diverse books and resources.

At the same time, board members say it was all a misunderstanding.

The list of books, articles, websites and resources was put together last year and involves dozens of popular books including “The Hate U Give” and “I Am Malala,” according to the York Daily Record.

Before Monday’s school board meeting, the newspaper estimated at least 200 parents rallying, saying the ban needed to be overturned.

The York Dispatch reported that last November, the materials on the list were “restricted” from use in classrooms by the board, which resulted in the Central York High School principal Ryan Caufman sending out a letter this school year saying they were “not to be permitted to be utilized in the classroom.”

However, during the meeting, board members said it was never intended to be a ban.

YDR reported that board President Jane Johnson shared a statement that said the action taken on Nov. 9, 2020, was meant to be a “freeze” on the list of books and resources, not a ban. This list was supposed to be reviewed, but it never happened. The books were not removed from the district libraries, Johnson said.

Another board member, Kyle King, said he did not support banning books and that he apologized for the review not happening.

The board unanimously voted to rescind the restrictions, according to multiple reports.

While there were many parents rallying to get the books back into curriculums and libraries, some parents who spoke during the meeting complained about specific works.

One commenter, Christina Hardesty, told the district she did not object to some books, like informational picture books on Rosa Parks and Jessey Owens, but did object to ones that teach Critical Race Theory and “promote socialism and communism,” YDR reported.

Another supporter, Jennifer Hyman, cited critical race theory as her main concern, saying the books were a “smokescreen” to indoctrinate students, YDR reported.

But critics of the ban held fast after protesting all week, WHTM reported.

Delma Rivera-Lytle, a Central York diversity education specialist, told the station: “This is not the Central I know. This is not who we are. We are not a school district that should be seen as racist or divisive. We are a school district that really does support diversity.”

95%+ of the protestors paranoid of the plandemic and "appropriately" face-diapered.

Snowflake babies.

Citizens in the community should purchase a wide variety of books and magazine subscriptions that students can borrow from the library. I am all for a diversity of books to read, since that helps students learn about a variety of topics.

It would be helpful for the high school library to have a subscription to American Rifleman, and books on topics like Gunsmithing the AR-15, or books on safe shooting and defense skills. The high school library would also be improved by the books President Trump wrote, and those of many other authors with views different than those commonly taught in High Schools.

Parents could donate the books and subscriptions to the schools do that taxpayers could not complain about the cost.

The school board wants diversity, and a diverse set of ideas for students to learn about is a good thing.

Skip Mill. J. S. Mill is anti-conservative trash...... No more socialist indoctrination.

Replace with works of the Founders.

I would have included Emerson and Thoreau but I have concern for your blood pressure.

(BTW I score more Libertarian than “pure” conservative)

“Parents could donate the books...”

Back in the day my son quickly read the books on the list that had a bunch of questions about the book to prove you read them. He would read other books not on the list but didn’t like doing a book report to prove it.

We ended up buying and donating a bunch of the books with the ready-made questions.

Mini-burqas. Old Alinsky trick to label things the opposite of what they truly are (like Affordable Care Act aka ObamaDONTcare with it’s $5K deductible if you even had to actually use it when sick). Democrats will say anything no matter how ludicrous just to hear their own voice and see your reaction. I saw an article over at CNSnews about today’s winner, “ WH’s Psaki: Migrants Setting Up Camps in U.S. ‘Not Intending to Stay Here for a Lengthy Period of Time’ “, so give that a look. Ole jerkle circ also claimed ILLEGAL ALIENS don’t need the vaccine despite never being tested. If ‘diversity’ was so great then China, Indian, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, Japan, Iran, Nigeria (soon to be #3 in population), and many more would all be doing it.

And the 1973 French novel “The Camp of the Saints”, which predicted the invasion of the West by the third world.

Emerson is an acquired taste, neither here nor there.

Thoreau ought to be read more too though. Far too many people want "someone ought to do something" but exclude self; as in "someone else ought to do something."

Read, or, listened to.
