FBI says fortune seized in Beverly Hills raid was criminals’ loot. Owners say: Where’s the proof?
Los Angeles Times ^ | 9/20/2021 | Michael Finnegan

After the FBI seized Joseph Ruiz’s life savings during a raid on a safe deposit box business in Beverly Hills, the unemployed chef went to court to retrieve his $57,000. A judge ordered the government to tell Ruiz why it was trying to confiscate the money.

It came from drug trafficking, an FBI agent responded in court papers.

Ruiz’s income was too low for him to have that much money, and his side business selling bongs made from liquor bottles suggested he was an unlicensed pot dealer, the agent wrote. The FBI also said a dog had smelled unspecified drugs on Ruiz’s cash.

The FBI was wrong. When Ruiz produced records showing the source of his money was legitimate, the government dropped its false accusation and returned his money.

It’s long last time to completely disband the FBI.

Now seize Nasty Piglosi’s fortune because there’s no way she can have mega-millions of dollars on a Congressional pay!

The judge told them to seize the store but NOT THE CONTENTS of the boxes because there was no proof of wrongdoing. They were explicitly told NOT to do what they did. THEN they were told top return the contents to the owners.

And this same government now wants banks to let the IRS know about bank transactions for accounts having over $600. This is banana republic stuff.

Actually...yes there is.It's perfectly legal...but utterly amoral. Members of Congress are allowed to use privileged info on companies...info about government contracts for example...when deciding to buy,or sell,a stock.

Take Boeing for example. The DoD has just decided to award a $50 billion contract to Lockheed rather than Boeing. It hasn't been made public yet...only Lockheed and Boeing executives and certain members of Congress know.

A member of Congress would be allowed to use this knowledge to buy Lockheed stock and/or sell Boeing stock. OTOH if a Lockheed,or Boeing, executive used it to buy or sell it would mean 10 years at Club Fed.

And,of course,it hasn't been made public yet so members of The Great Unwashed like us wouldn't be about to cash in on this government decision.

For the longest time, civil forfeiture has been abused. Way back in 1993, I objected to this practice because it was ripe for corrupt practice. At that time, I still assumed America was not corrupt.

Silly, naive me.
