How Dan Quayle Helped Convince Mike Pence Not to Overturn Election, According to New Book: 'Forget It'

While Mike Pence was lauded by Democrats — and widely criticized by the president and the Republican base — for his refusal to overturn the results of the election won by Joe Biden in 2020, it turns out that a different vice president may have been responsible for the decision.

In the upcoming book Peril, Robert Costa and Bob Woodward write that then-Vice President Pence reached out to 74-year-old Dan Quayle — who served as vice president from 1989 to 1993 under President George H. W. Bush — in the waning days of the Trump presidency.

"Over and over, Pence asked if there was anything he could do," Costa and Woodward write, suggesting that Pence was looking for a way to acquiesce to Donald Trump's demands that he reject the electoral votes legally-cast in Biden's favor.

According to the book, Quayle quickly put the kibosh on any effort to overturn the election, telling Pence: "Mike, you have no flexibility on this. None. Zero. Forget it. Put it away."

When Pence "pressed again," the authors write, he did so by explaining that he was under pressure from Trump. (A spokesman for Pence did not respond to a request for comment on Peril.)

"You don't know the position I'm in," he told Quayle, according to the authors, to which Quayle responded: "I do know the position you're in. I also know what the law is. You listen to the parliamentarian [who issues rulings about congressional authority]. That's all you do. You have no power.'"

Can anybody point to anything in the Constitution or law that gives the VP/Senate Pres. power to overturn a Presidential Election? Anything? Please quote directly from the Constitution the section that would allow Pence to overturn the election.

They won’t because they can’t.

The Constitution is not clear on this problem so it’s much safer to just turn the country over to the communists and let them figure it out.

Seriously wtf?

The Parlamentarian is NOT the law. As unfortun we may be about to find out, regarding amnesty in the reconciliation bill.

It was the job of the congressmen and senators to present their challenges and evidence. When that didn’t happen, Pence was stuck.

I still remember the collective reaction when Bush 41 named Quayle as his running mate:

How about questioning the legitimacy of a given state’s election and certification?

Nah, not a fan of unelected faceless people deciding what the laws can be. The “opposition” should be preventing these crazy logs but the like of Mitch are actually all for them

He had just as much constitutional authority as governors, state courts, and unelected bureaucrats to change election laws. The democrats challenged it and won. Republicans always look at things from the perspective of what they can’t do, and play it safe, we lose.

I watched Pence do this. He is a liar. He had no desire to stand up for truth.

What he regrets now is being RIGHTFULLY hailed as a traitor.

-> would allow Pence to overturn the election.

Not to overturn.

But 30 Pence held two envelopes from multiple states.

These should have been returned to those states to have them put the state voice behind one slate of electors.

Maybe it would have had the same result. Maybe not.

He failed, creating his own description as he accepted fraudulent electors.

When you have to seek advice from Dan Q, Potatoe, you have already decided poorly.

This was the terminal point of Pence’s career as far as 10s of millions of Patriots are concerned ….

No such power. The VP opening the certificates for counting is just a procedural thing. But I completely sympathize with those who see this as a power, as I share their frustrations over the suspicious election. I would have liked to see Pence hold things up a little, perhaps not open the certificates until 11:59 PM, make some crazy speech, instigate and protract some debate, etc., but the same time I am going to admit it would not have been productive.

The Pence apologists, AKA constitutional geniuses, pleased with the outcome of potentially an illegal election are out in force making fools of themselves over a simple misnomer.

He did/does have the power to not certify the election(s).

Unlike what the Pence apologist would have you believe, the power obligation he had was/is not a rubber stamp of potential, actually, obvious fraud.

So Pence used the opinion of “constitutional expert” Dan Quayle rather than constitutional expert Mark Levin.

Figures.

Pence is dead to me.
