How Dan Quayle Helped Convince Mike Pence Not to Overturn Election, According to New Book: 'Forget It'
Yahoo ^ | 9/26/2021 | Virginia Chamlee

While Mike Pence was lauded by Democrats — and widely criticized by the president and the Republican base — for his refusal to overturn the results of the election won by Joe Biden in 2020, it turns out that a different vice president may have been responsible for the decision.

In the upcoming book Peril, Robert Costa and Bob Woodward write that then-Vice President Pence reached out to 74-year-old Dan Quayle — who served as vice president from 1989 to 1993 under President George H. W. Bush — in the waning days of the Trump presidency.

"Over and over, Pence asked if there was anything he could do," Costa and Woodward write, suggesting that Pence was looking for a way to acquiesce to Donald Trump's demands that he reject the electoral votes legally-cast in Biden's favor.

According to the book, Quayle quickly put the kibosh on any effort to overturn the election, telling Pence: "Mike, you have no flexibility on this. None. Zero. Forget it. Put it away."

When Pence "pressed again," the authors write, he did so by explaining that he was under pressure from Trump. (A spokesman for Pence did not respond to a request for comment on Peril.)

"You don't know the position I'm in," he told Quayle, according to the authors, to which Quayle responded: "I do know the position you're in. I also know what the law is. You listen to the parliamentarian [who issues rulings about congressional authority]. That's all you do. You have no power.'"

What abuse of power? He thought the vote was invalid so he refused to count it. According to you he has that power.

Oh, I think he could have "declared" it wrong, and then we would have gone through the exact same recounting that we went through, and when it was all said and done, Bush would have still been found to have won Florida.

Only if you discount those votes which the Democrats thought should have been counted.

They had quite a lot of people going over those ballots, and by the time they were done, even the most generous counting still did not put Al Gore into the lead.

No matter how many times they threw the Democrats a bone in an effort to help Gore win, he still never came up with enough votes to make it happen.

Which states officially sent more than one slate of electors?

Like to pin your qualifier on the word "officially" hmm? Clearly the "official" process was subverted, and to those of us paying attention it was clear that the political machines in those state's bureaucracies were working to rig the game.

Only the legislature had the power to change the rules for elections, and the fact that state bureaucrats did it to aid them in vote fraud makes the entire process invalid.

Or is this just another case where reality doesn't comport with your preferences so you deny it?

There haven't been any cases of that, so it cannot be "another case".

The reality is that there was massive fraud in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Georgia, Wisconsin, Arizona and even Nevada, and we are finally seeing evidence emerge out of Arizona and Georgia, while efforts in Pennsylvania are slowly starting to build pressure in the same direction.

And as I have pointed out to you at other times on other subjects, as hard as it is to win arguments with intelligent people it's virtually impossible to win one with stupid people. So I'll leave you and your idiotic conclusions to yourself.

Making you go away and stop spreading false ideas is a win in my book.

Is reading comprehension not your forte? Where did i say anything about cheating? What would have been your reaction if this scenario had played out in 2012 with no cheating?

If I read your message correctly, you were comparing what would have happened in the Romney election if he had won with what happened in the 2020 election. The "cheating" took place in the 2020 election. That's where I got the "cheating" aspect of what you said.

If I have misunderstood what you were trying to say, perhaps you could clarify it for me by restating it in simpler terms?

Shouting might blow off the anger, but it does not change the essence of the role of a presiding officer. The President of the Senate IS NOT King of the Senate. We got fucked and there was no remedy other than challenging the electors.

You have to believe there was massive fraud in order to have people think you aren't ignorant.

With all the articles that have appeared on Free Republic demonstrating the occasions of vote fraud which occurred, how can any rational person think there wasn't massive fraud?

It has nothing to do with purity, we can all be wrong when we don't know the facts, but not learning the facts is a kind of willful ignorance.

How on earth can you believe there wasn't massive fraud?

Disagree. He could have refused to participate at the very least.

You know, I’m with this. I agree with Dan Quayle here.

In normal times, Dan was quite right.

HOWEVER

Extraordinary times call for extraordinary measures.

The massive voter fraud that occured in 5 swing states precluded a fair election, and it was time for Mike Pence to do something out-of-the-ordinary.

He should have refused to report the results or allow certification.

Now, refusing to participate is a different thing. Role would likely have fallen to the pro-tem.

The evidence of voter fraud available today is in no way comparable to what was available on January 6th. At that time there were plenty of allegations and some claims of evidence, but no state legislature or no state or federal court had issued any ruling that fraud had occurred. Pence could rule on his own that fraud had happened, and no state legislature had, as a body, called any of their slate of electors into question. So given the circumstances, even if he had the power to reject electors there is still nothing Pence could have done.

Well we will never know now will we? It was much easier to just throw in the towel and give the country to commie democrats. Surrender was so much easier. I’m sure the communists will be very fair to everyone.

Well said. Some of these boot lickers are enough to make you sick. I guess to them it is better to give up like a gentlemen that fight for your freedom.

Would have been World War III

Did it ever occur to you that there was obvious fraud in the 2020 election and none in the 2012 election? Are you really that obdurate?

Pence should have resigned prior to certification and thrown the whole process into chaos, which it already was in chaos.
