Interesting idea. Worth the read.
Vietnam remains in the control of a communist authoritarian government....capitalist-influenced economy...defined by a strong export market...
They can pay for their own d-mn submarines.
50 billion reason$ why the US shouldn’t.
Well, we gave 85 billion to the Taliban. And we are so flush with money and all. I see no reason why we shouldn’t borrow money to buy subs for Vietnam.
We didn’t need to do such lunacy back before Trump, the actual president was overthrown. He just clipped China’s wings with a few tariffs and laws. They were well on the way to being brought to heel by such measures. But they hired their swamp and business minions to conduct the steal.
Just like the left to spend OPM on OPP and abandon the people they are supposed to take care of. How do I get a gov’t job?
General Milly Vanilli would nix that plan, to avoid offending his CCP masters.
Paid for by an evenly distributed cut across all federal employee paychecks of course, then you got a deal.
Otherwise, no.
The only $$$$ the U.S. should add to the idea of Vietnam buying the diesel powered submarines from France, is offering Vietnam U.S. private banks U.S.-government-backed (makes a lower interest rate) loans, to help Vietnam make that acquisition. But no, the U.S, should not buy them and gift them to Vietnam.
The government risks little to nothing unless Vietnam were to default on the loans to the U.S. banks, which would risk Vietnam’s growing need for western friends vis-a-vis the CCP.
Considering Vietnam was a French colony, and they are so woke over there in frog land, they should just give them the subs.
Sure— for a NON-Communist Vietnam, who would have to change their government to a Constitutional Republic. Might have a chance if they changed to Ho Chi Minh’s Constitution which was basically... the US one, and his original structure of govt.
We have our OWN submarines to fund in current production as it is to “give” any to Vietnam. Though, must say, if we can leave behind 89 BILLION of US mil equipment to the Taliban- it might be a cheaper deterrent given to Vietnam- the hereditary enemy of China for centuries, even Commie China.
wtf are we, Santa Clause?
So they want to lower the US defense spending and give the money that would have gone to US military to the Gooks? Idiots!
Weren’t these diesel boats late in the acquisitions process and behind schedule?
Thanks for posting!

G_d knows, our government has done and is doing MUCH stupider things with our money. We would get a lot of bang for our buck by doing this.
How about offering to buy them for Taiwan? That would definitely set the cat among the pigeons given the French and German desire to sell a softening of anti-Chinese actions to Moscow and Beijing in exchange for more trade.
Much better idea than arming more communists.
