That was what I thought, originally. Turns out that Kris Kristofferson wrote the song. It was recorded by Roger Miller, Kenney Rogers and Gordon Lightfoot but is most remembered as sung by Janis Joplin. I think her version sold so well because it was released posthumously after she ODed on heroin.
