'Hotlanta' is even more sweltering in these neighborhoods due to a racist 20th century policy
CNN ^

Atlanta, Georgia (CNN)On a warm September afternoon, Mona Scott sat on the front porch while her home baked like an oven. As she ran a frozen water bottle across her forehead and arms, Scott told CNN her air conditioning broke 10 days earlier and had not yet been fixed. "The windows are painted shut," Scott said. "We come outside at night to sleep because it's too hot inside." Like Scott, residents in the low-income communities across south and southwest Atlanta are struggling to cope with the hottest summer since the Dust Bowl. "It's just so hot" Scott said as she wiped sweat from her brow.

The staggering temperature difference is due in large part to historical redlining, a federal government-sanctioned effort that began in the 1930s that amplified segregation by denying loans and insurance to potential home buyers in poorer neighborhoods and neighborhoods of color.....

Confronting environmental racism

Black people are 40% more likely to live in areas with the largest projected increase in heat-related deaths if the planet reaches 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial temperatures, according to a recent EPA report. This rises to 59% if the planet reaches 4 degrees Celsius. In August, global scientists said warming had already reached approximately 1.2 degrees Celsius and showed no signs of slowing.

Atlanta in the late summer, no mater where you live, is damn hot and humid. Use that free covid money and fix your A/C. Oh wait you blew it on a two week vacay in FL. So sorry for you.

I went to get groceries the other day and I thought I was going to pass out." Scott told CNN. She said she suffers from high blood pressure and diabetes, which are underlying health conditions made worse by excessive heat.

She'd also feel better and less likely to pass out.

You can't use that as an excuse now. Almost half of the people on Federal subsidies are black, but constitute about 13% of the population. Yeah, I can hear the job discrimination arguments coming out, but unless you're blind or you're ignoring the Help Wanted signs, employers are begging for workers. Get a job, learn how to un-paint a window, and stick a window air conditioner in it. I'm so tired of the Woe-Is-Me crowd who refuse to help themselves.

Hard to understand how a city that is under total democrat control with a majority of black politicians could not be taking care of Mona and her air conditioning issue. Maybe CNN can give her a few bucks for telling her story.

I live just north of Atlanta. It ain’t been that hot this year I have seen much hotter years. Growing up in south GA we had no AC. Maybe a window fan. I recall sleepless summer nights where you just lay there and swelter. I don’t recall thinking it was somehow racist that I was uncomfortable.

I was tempted to make light of this article, but poverty is no joke.

Let me identify solutions to the problems: a job, an education, stop encouraging children to become sexually active at age thirteen, don’t have children at age fourteen, don’t get married at sixteen, after marriage stay married. Don’t vote democrat.

Start with that.

Until about the 1970s, most mortgages came from a local savings and loan associations, which held and serviced their loans.

If her windows are painted shut, couldn’t she use a knife or a putty knife to free them?

and its all WHITEYs fault
and Trumps fault.

Maybe, someone in your stellar family tree should have done SOMETHING.

But Nope. DinDO Nuffin is cultural rot

It’s RAYCIST doncha know.

But not welded shut. So. Ms. Scott, grab a putty knife or a box cutter.
If you need the box cutter, be sure to cut away from you.

“ Keeping the lights on is hard enough financially for Scott, and so many other disadvantaged community members, let alone having access to reliable air conditioning.”

LOL. Racists from 1930 are causing this!

The window might be painted shut to prevent a dangerous lead poisoning situation.

Blacks, instead of building new on the fringe of the metropolitan area, insisted in the 1960’s that the federal government allow them to buy in white areas with mainly 40-year old houses, which unfortunately were typically covered with lead paint.
