But you can definitely tell exactly what is going on from aerial images.
No, actually, latest gen IR sensors are very clear, and they do not simply show a heat signature. They are capable of differentiating down to .01 degree F, and the displays are in HD so to the tune of 20+ megapixels.
15 years ago in AFG and IRQIR sensors aboard USAF 130s could show us who was on the ground doing stuff, to the degree that we could Id facial features, I can only assume todays gear is exponentially more better....
