Actually, less than one-fourth of Australia is inhabitable. Most of the interior is a dry desert and Australia has no known natural resources.

So either the Chicoms will control densely-populated areas or a huge desert interior full of wild, poisonous animals.

You’d be surprised what a resourceful group of people could do with “uninhabitable land”.

Eskimos live on ice sheets and many millions live in desert areas.

Even early American explorers called the Great Plans a “wasteland”.
