Sears is shutting its last store in Illinois, its home state

The last Sears department store located in the retailer’s home state of Illinois is getting ready to close its doors for good.

The shop, located in Simon Property Group’s Woodfield Mall, is scheduled to shutter on Nov. 14, the company confirmed to CNBC.

A spokesman for the department store chain’s parent company, Transformco, said it will look for ways to revive the space with another tenant because it also manages the real estate.

“This is part of the company’s strategy to unlock the value of the real estate and pursue the highest and best use for the benefit of the local community,” Transformco said in a statement.

Sears Holdings, which also owned Kmart, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in October 2018. Transformco later acquired Sears out of bankruptcy and has since closed dozens of the remaining Sears and Kmart locations across the United States.

Kmart’s last location in Manhattan recently shut. It will be replaced by a Wegmans grocery store.

A spokesperson for Transformco declined to confirm how many Sears and Kmart stores are still open.

The company’s websites list 35 Sears locations, including the one at Woodfield Mall, and 22 Kmart stores.

Sears was founded in Chicago in the 1890s. Its business blossomed through much of the 20th century, as it sold everything from homes to apparel. Sears was once the largest retailer in the nation, boasting thousands of stores.

The company had about 700 stores, many of them barren of goods, when it filed for bankruptcy protection.

Scott Carr, president of Transformco’s real estate division, said in a statement that the company plans to maximize the value of the Woodfield Mall property through a redevelopment.

I still have some Craftsman tools I got as a teen in the early to mid 80s.

“Growing up the Sears Christmas catalog gave us many hours of wishing.....”

And that wasn’t even the toy catalogue.

You could order just about ANYTHING through their catalog, and have it shipped to your house.

You could order a house from their catalogs. Every piece of wood was numbered and you could assemble it yourself or hire someone to build it for you. There are still lots of Sears Homes still standing.

Thats cool.
My 1st major purchase in 72 was a Hoover Celebrity vacuum from Sears at Sunrise & US1 in Lauderdale. Had to keep our Bachelor Pad on Las Olas tidy
Bought it on Sears credit paid it off and established credit.
I still have the vac and it works great

Black and Decker used to be quality. Now it’s just crap. My wife won’t have a Black and Decker anything in the house.

I’ve got a couple of broken Craftsman tools. I better hustle my butt over to Chicago to cash in on the lifetime warranty before it’s too late.

In their earlier days, Sears had THE preeminent mail order business. You could order just about ANYTHING through their catalog, and have it shipped to your house....

You could even buy your house. And most are still standing. Apparently, the lumber pieces were so exact that the builders ended up with about one wheelbarrow of "waste."

In my lifetime I have seen the demise of Sears, K-mart, Woolworths, J.C.Penny, Otasco, TG&Y and Wards.

With Walmart ascending.

However with the self-checkout counters at Walmart I have started shopping at more local owned stores that still have checkout personnel.

With self checkout, I have found you better not double scan an item or you will be charged double, have to pay for it, then take your receipt to the “Customer Service” to get a refund on the second item you did NOT buy.

Always check your receipt after self checkout at Walmart!

Proto Tools are made by the same company as Craftsman tools?

Where are Craftsman tools made?

Sure way to destroy a company: load it up with MBAs, Harvard Business School graduates, leveraged buyout experts, pointy headed nattering nabobs.

Long before Amazon, there was the Sears Catalog, and you could get anything from them. It was all made in the USA too, no Chinese junk. Our little town had a Sears Catalog Store, and you could place your order, and pick it up a few days later. Sweet.

Timex watch link. Thanks....

1950-1960s= dishwasher to test Timex durability.

2021= Hunter and his Dad laundering payoff money for Biden favors to foreign interests, and selling suddenly “valuable” works of “art” for a fortune.

I bought a Kenmore HEPA Air Cleaner Purifier Ionizer in 1990 for $95 for my bedroom. Every three months I change the outer carbon filter maybe about $2.00 and once a year the inner main filter ($30 -$40). That’s roughly $1,290.00 in filters. The unit still runs like new and I can’t sleep without the hum.

"They had a good run."

They got feminized and let K-mart buy them out.. They didn't sell much that a man would be interested in...well, maybe tools, but everyone else does also.. And cheaper..

Yep. Picked out our Xmas toys. They failed to embrace the future. Got away from retail by buying Dean Witter and creating Discover card.

Kenmore was actually made by Whirlpool. I built refrigerators there in Ft. Smith one summer.

I think they invented layaway.

They stupidly canceled their catalog just a few years before online ordering took off. No foresight.

Could have been Amazon.

BTW, I’ve had a Kenmore washer/dryer for 18 years.

I think Lowe’s sells Craftsman now. Not the tools of your father. I believe now Chinese manufacture.

Craftsman tools used to be good, but Sears sold off the name years ago, and the formerly good tools turned into tools made of cheese. For hand tools, I prefer Snap-on.
