We might be close to the same age. When I was growing up, everyone older than me remembered WWII. The fact that I grew up in a Navy town, Long Beach, just reinforced the idea that I had just missed out on something big. Victory at Sea taught me, but it really was made to remind my elders what they had all collectively lived through.

I showed some episodes to my Jr High students. The pictures of the kamikaze attacks and all of the flak our ships put up really caught their attention.

I was born in 1948. So growing up we were steeped in WW2. We killed millions of japs with our plastic tommy guns. Lol.
