Key senators eye the exits ahead of 2022 midterms: 'It's a six-year commitment'

John Thune, the No. 2 Senate Republican, is struggling with a crucial decision: Whether to ask South Dakota voters for six more years in office.

Chuck Grassley, the longest-serving Senate Republican, says Iowa voters are increasingly urging him to run again, and he's now considering moving up his much-anticipated announcement about whether to extend his 40 years of service in the chamber.

Democratic Sen. Patrick Leahy of Vermont -- a Senate veteran of 46 years who is third in line of presidential succession -- says he'll make a decision "after I go snow-shoeing and cross-country skiing."

GOP Sen. Ron Johnson, who faces a tough path to reelection in Wisconsin next year, says deciding whether to seek a third term is on the "backburner" for him. And GOP Sen. Lisa Murkowski, who has been targeted by former President Donald Trump, has yet to explicitly say she will run again.

As the midterm election season begins to take shape, party leaders are closely watching the decisions the five senators make about their political careers, something that could reshape the body, spark internal jockeying for key leadership positions and alter the race for the next Senate majority.

Saw that. How they ever came up with that is baffling. Wait, it’s CNN; never mind.

No he’s correct. You don’t include the president in the line of succession.

So it would go Vice-President, Speaker, President Pro-Tempore.

You know what? IMO, people with several decades of “public service” just need to retire.

We need fresh blood.

If we knew a Republican could replace Chuck Grassley I’d agree - but we need every live body to keep our fragile numbers up.

That’s three of about 15-20 that should be headed for the door. Sickens me that they’re all eligible for pensions, but it is what it is. I’d take them just going away only to be seen or heard on CNN MSNBC ABC CBS NBC , where they’re welcome.

Old Senators are like young people out after 11 pm.

They shouldn’t be.

Somebody needs to take a civics class. Nazi Pelosi is 3rd in line to be Resident.

Speaker of the House is second in line after the vice-president. President-Pro-Temp is third in line.

Note that no Democrats are retiring.

They don't retire, they hang on until they're carried out feet first.

I place more importance on Murkowski simply because she is my Senator; much to my embarrassment. I am hoping that Kelly Tshibaka can unseat her. At least the view will be better.

TERM LIMITS!

Yes and members of the house should be chosen by lottery among registered voters like jury duty and limited to one term. After that one term they could be eligible to run for Senate.
