DeSantis Eliminates Common Core in Florida
The Floridian ^ | 9/14/2021 | Jim McCool

An issue that has plagued the Republican debate for years now might actually be resolved in Florida. Common Core, which has been debated as far back as the 2015 GOP Presidential Primary, has effectively been eliminated by Governor Ron DeSantis (R-FL), making Florida the first state to replace it.

In Clearwater, Florida, the governor announced what could possibly be the end for Common Core education in Florida. The deal is a legislative proposal that will eliminate the common-core-based, end-of-year, high-stakes Florida Statewide Assessment and create the new Florida Assessment of Student Thinking (F.A.S.T) plan, which will monitor student progress and foster individual growth. By creating the F.A.S.T. Plan, Florida will become the first state in the nation to fully implement progress monitoring instead of end-of-year standardized testing, and fully eliminate common core.:

“Florida’s education focus should be students’ growth and how we restore the conversation between parents and teachers in support of students’ growth,” said Governor DeSantis. “In this final step to eradicate Common Core from our assessments, our administration is implementing the lessons learned from progress monitoring both during the state’s recovery and from our districts and schools that were already showing how we can better support students reaching their own unique growth goals.”

The DeSantis administration insists that this transition to statewide progress monitoring for school accountability, Florida will restore the ability for parents and teachers to have impactful conversations about students’ growth and inform parents’ ability to help their children grow by:

I appreciate his efforts. But the devil is in the details. I have family members in the Florida public education system. It’s essentially unfixable.

I worked at a Regional Office of Education when they (common core standards) were introduced. A whole generation has been ruined . . .not to mention the educators who were teaching them. Students were not allowed to add 1 plus 1 without a picture and description. I always asked the question, “How were the skyscrapers built, etc. etc. etc. without common core?” I hope he takes a look at his state’s bullying programs, sex ed programs, too.

I am jealous of Floridians, what a great governor. I wish we had someone like him. I’m in Illinois….
DeSantis for president, someday?

It was introduced in 2010. At this rate, 49 more states will have banned it in 539 years.

My thought too - if the schools and the teachers want Common Core, there ain’t a damn thing any politician can do about it. Here in Texas we used to have nationally famous ‘Textbook Wars’ where our elected State Board of Education tried to require things like learning reading, math, and history, without learning to hate the United States. So the state would pay for approved textbooks, but not unapproved.

The Textbook Wars used to be big news, because the SBOE was always conservative. But the schools found a way around it. They went to on-line course material and simply bypassed the SBOE to get their America-Hating agenda back in the classroom. It took nearly 10 years for the politicians to even figure out what was going on, and I still don’t know if they figured out a way to stop it.

We have a whistleblower from a school in Florida where the school hid (didn’t report) assaults, bomb threats, etc to the state. She released the data and was fired by the school district.

If Trump doesn’t run DeSantis is my first choice. If Trump runs he should be the VP.

He’s everything that milque toast Pence wasn’t - a fighter like Trump.

Local Miami media gritted its collective teeth and covered DeSantis today, since he was in Miami to announce the event.

The liberal superintendent of Miami Dade schools apparently refused to show up, but put out a tweet—happy Common Core is gone, but the lib reportedly REFUSED to mention the governor by name.

One lady I saw on stage with Ron DeSantis refused to even shake his hand.

Liberals are so rude and self-centered.
